UNIT OF INQUIRY
HOW THE WORLD WORKS
Students will explore what energy is, how we use it, and how those choices impact the world. They will investigate scientific principles of energy and examine patterns of consumption. Through inquiry, students will learn to recognise different forms of energy, understand how energy use changes over time, and reflect on their responsibility to make sustainable choices. They will research real-world solutions and think critically about innovation and conservation. This unit builds thinking, research, and self-management skills for a more sustainable future.
LANGUAGE
THE LANGUAGE OF SCIENCE
Students will explore how scientists use language to ask questions, test ideas, and explain results. They will read and write lab reports, analyze data, and create infographics. They will learn to use precise vocabulary, organize ideas clearly, and support claims with evidence. By observing, experimenting, and drawing conclusions, students will build a deep understanding of how scientific thinking works. They will communicate their findings using charts, graphs, and structured reports that inform and explain.
MATHS
NUMBER OPERATIONS continued...
Students will investigate how number operations connect and help solve real-world problems. They will explore addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using models, patterns, and reasoning. Through inquiry, they will deepen understanding of ratios, order of operations, and how algorithms represent thinking. Students will develop mental strategies, estimate, and explain their steps clearly. They will build accuracy and flexibility with whole numbers and decimals, growing confidence in complex calculations through hands-on tasks and collaborative problem-solving.
MEASUREMENT
Students will explore how measurement helps us understand and describe the world. They will use standard units to measure length, area, volume, mass, capacity, and time. Through inquiry, they will compare, convert, and apply units to real-life problems. They will investigate how accuracy depends on tools and context. Students will develop skills in using formulas, estimating, and choosing appropriate strategies. This unit builds confidence in applying measurement in meaningful, everyday situations through hands-on tasks and collaborative thinking.
PORTUGUESE
ENERGY, IDEAS AND ARGUMENT
In this unit, students will strengthen their Portuguese literacy skills through connections with the Year 6 How the World Works Unit of Inquiry. Using energy, transformation, everyday applications, and responsible choices as contexts, students will read, discuss, and evaluate argumentative and persuasive texts, identifying opinions, arguments, evidence, and different viewpoints. They will participate in structured discussions and debates, using reasons and evidence to defend their ideas respectfully. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will develop argumentative writing, organise arguments and counterarguments into coherent paragraphs, use persuasive and linking language, and strengthen their use of adverbs, synonyms and antonyms, sentence types, verb tenses, punctuation, and revision for clarity and effectiveness.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
ENERGY IN MOTION
Students will develop their skills through Triathlon and Swimming, with a focus on energy, endurance, movement, efficiency, performance, and responsible choices. Integrated with the Year 6 How the World Works Unit of Inquiry, students will explore how energy is used and transferred during physical activity. Through Triathlon, they will consider how the body uses energy differently during swimming, cycling, and running, and practise strategies for managing effort and endurance. In Swimming, students will explore how technique and efficient movement can help conserve energy and improve performance. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will identify risks in physical activities, make safe choices in different environments, and reflect on how movement, safety, and environmental conditions are connected.
