SHARING THE PLANET

Students will learn about how access to clean water affects communities around the world. They will inquire into the causes and effects of water-related challenges and examine how human actions influence water as a resource. Through research and communication, students will build conceptual understandings of responsibility, equality, and well-being. They will investigate real-world issues, conduct experiments, and develop empathy as they learn how water connects to health, safety, and opportunities.

PERSPECTIVE WITH PURPOSE

Students will explore texts to identify and understand the messages they carry. They will ask questions, connect new vocabulary to what they already know, and examine how authors use language to convey meaning. Through writing, students will create personal narratives that communicate their own messages connected to the unit of inquiry, using descriptive language and thoughtful word choices. By combining reading strategies and writing skills, they will gain a deeper understanding of how texts can share ideas and express important messages.

MEASUREMENT

Students will explore how to measure length, mass, capacity, time, and temperature using standard and non-standard units. They will estimate, compare, and record measurements, and use tools like rulers, thermometers, and calendars. Students will read time on both digital and analogue clocks to the nearest quarter hour and use timelines to sequence events. They will solve real-life problems by choosing the right tools and units. Through hands-on activities, students will build a clear understanding of how and why we measure.

NUMBER OPERATIONS

In this unit, students will build fluency with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They will explore how operations connect and can be shown in different ways. Students will use mental strategies to solve problems when working with facts to 20, use a range of strategies to add and subtract bigger numbers, and conceptually explore multiplication and division. They will double, halve and skip count to solve problems and model equations. Through word problems and hands-on practice, students will develop confidence and flexibility with number operations.

COMMUNICATING IDEAS THROUGH COMICS

Students will strengthen their Portuguese literacy skills through meaningful connections with the Year 3 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry. Using ideas and learning from the UOI as a context, students will explore how comics combine written language, dialogue, images, sequencing, and visual clues to communicate information, actions, emotions, and different viewpoints. They will read and interpret comic strips, make predictions and inferences, use visual and written evidence to explain meaning, and discuss characters, events, and ideas with increasing confidence. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will develop expressive oral language, reading fluency, dialogue writing, vocabulary, punctuation, spelling, and grammar while learning to plan and create their own comics. They will organise ideas across panels, use speech bubbles and captions effectively, and revise their work so that words and images work together to communicate clearly to an audience.

WATER, SAFETY AND RESPONSIBILITY

Students will develop their skills through Adventure Challenge and Swimming, using teamwork, problem-solving, and safe movement in water-based contexts. Integrated with the Year 3 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry, students will explore ideas related to water access, conservation, responsibility, cooperation, and well-being. Through challenges and swimming experiences, they will consider why water is an essential resource, how responsible choices can help protect it, and how access to clean water can affect people’s health and quality of life. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will strengthen water safety, swimming confidence, collaboration, and decision-making, while also practising safe behaviours in different settings, following community rules, and participating responsibly in safety routines and drills.
