YEAR 6 | UNIT 1
YEAR 6 | UNIT 1
UNIT OF INQUIRY
WHO WE ARE
Students will explore how growing and changing shapes who they are. They will inquire into physical, emotional, and cognitive changes and how these affect their well-being and relationships. By exploring big ideas like form, function, change, and causation, students will learn how the body works, why it changes, and what those changes mean. They will build strategies to manage change with confidence and care. This unit supports balanced development and builds thinking, reflection, and self-management skills for lifelong wellbeing.
LANGUAGE
DIGGING DEEPER
Students will dig deeper into complex ideas by exploring non-fiction texts, interviews, case studies, and primary sources. They will ask big questions, think critically, and synthesize new understandings. Students will analyze how text features, structure, and language shape meaning and perspective. They will evaluate sources for bias and credibility. Through research and writing, they will create clear, purposeful non-fiction texts that share powerful insights. This unit builds curiosity, clarity of thought, and a deeper connection to the world.
MATHS
NUMBER & NUMBER SENSE
Students will explore how the base 10 system extends infinitely in both directions into large numbers and decimals. They will build strong number sense, understand place value deeply, and connect it to real-life contexts. They will compare, estimate, round, and order numbers, including negative integers. Students will model exponents, explore square roots, and identify patterns like prime numbers. This inquiry will grow their reasoning, problem-solving, and mental math skills, encouraging flexible thinking and mathematical confidence.
PATTERN & FUNCTION
Students will investigate number patterns and discover how to describe them using rules, tables, graphs, and algebraic expressions. They will explore how exponents show repeated multiplication and how roots reverse that process. Through inquiry, students will create, extend, and solve patterns and equations in real-life contexts. They will build skills in reasoning, problem-solving, and using symbols to represent thinking. This unit strengthens their ability to generalize patterns and communicate mathematical ideas clearly and confidently.
MEASUREMENT
Students will explore how measurement helps us understand and describe the world. They will use standard units to measure length, area, volume, mass, capacity, and time. Through inquiry, they will compare, convert, and apply units to real-life problems. They will investigate how accuracy depends on tools and context. Students will develop skills in using formulas, estimating, and choosing appropriate strategies. This unit builds confidence in applying measurement in meaningful, everyday situations through hands-on tasks and collaborative thinking.
