Throughout the year, we host a range of conferences aimed at connecting students, parents, and teachers in order to support student growth. Below please find the list of conferences that will take place throughout the year, as well as a description of each.
Parent-Teacher Connection meetings are an opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher at the beginning of the new school year. The purpose of the connection meetings is to begin to develop a strong relationship between home and school, and to develop teachers’ understanding of the needs of their individual learners.
The meetings align closely to the following LIS values:
A strong community is built on inclusion, participation, communication, kindness and mutual respect.
Integrity, empathy, and trust are fundamental.
Respect for ourselves and others, our environment, and our cultural contexts guides our thoughts, actions and relationships.
During these meetings, you will have the opportunity to share information about your child with the teacher by answering some questions, which are linked below. The role of the parent during these meetings is to share information about their child and connect with the teacher, while the role of the teacher is to listen, connect with the parent(s) and take notes about the information being shared.
Your child’s teacher will reach out to you with instructions for scheduling this meeting. Parents arriving late must expect a reduced meeting time. Due to the high level of importance in building a home-school connection for our learners, it is an expectation that all parents meet with their child/ren’s teacher(s) as we start the year. If you require a Portuguese translator, please let the teacher know in advance.
*** Please note that children do NOT attend this meeting and do NOT attend school on this day.

Primary Section Student-Led Conferences
What is a Student-Led Conference (SLC)?
Student-led conferences involve the students and their parents. The students are responsible for leading the conference and will take responsibility for their learning by sharing the process with their parents. Your child will show you a variety of learning engagements that represent a balance of learning across the programme. The samples have been previously selected with guidance and support from the teacher and will represent learning from both their classroom and single subjects areas (Performing Arts, Portuguese, Visual Arts, Physical Education, and Aquatics). The conference will last up to one hour (inclusive of visiting the single subject areas) and there may be several conferences taking place simultaneously.
Why hold Student-Led Conferences?
The purpose of Student-Led Conferences is for students to demonstrate independence and responsibility for their learning and communicate this to you. Your child will share their process of learning, self-reflection and self-evaluation. Expect your child to share their strengths and areas for improvement. This experience helps them understand how they are developing as learners while demonstrating important Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills such as communication, thinking and self-management skills.
What is your responsibility during the conference?
Your attention to your child’s presentation should be uninterrupted; therefore we request your mobile phone be switched to silent. You are expected to provide encouragement and feedback as your child proceeds with the conference. Ask questions to clarify and try not to direct or control the conference. The teacher will be present to facilitate and support the conferences however, s/he will not participate actively in the Student-Led Conferences. Please do not initiate discussions with the teacher, which exclude your child’s participation. Your child may ask you to complete some feedback about the conference before you leave the room.
What will I have to do to prepare for this?
Book your child’s conference online using the information that will be shared with you by your child’s homeroom teacher. On the SLC day please arrive at your chosen appointed time and take your child home with you at the end of the conference. There will be no lessons for Primary School students that day. Suggestions for questions that you can ask your child during the conference will be available on the day.
Year 6 learners will have a slightly different plan for the day. This will be communicated directly with families.
The Student-Led Conference is an exciting event that celebrates your child as a learner. There will be adults available to supervise siblings so you are able to fully participate in the conference time with your child. We are all looking forward to sharing each individual’s progress with you.
