SHARING THE PLANET

Students will explore how food security depends on natural and human-made factors. Through inquiry, they will investigate the interconnected elements that impact food availability, accessibility, and sustainability. They will analyze the consequences of food insecurity and develop an understanding of their responsibility in addressing it. Students will enhance their research and social skills, working collaboratively to explore real-world examples through field trips and guest speakers, while linking their learning to the global goal of Zero Hunger.

IN MY OPINION...

Students will read and analyze opinion texts to understand how authors express ideas and support them with reasons. They will learn to form their own opinions, use facts and examples, and organize their thinking clearly. Students will write persuasive pieces using strong vocabulary, linking words, and structured paragraphs. They will develop skills in revising, editing, and using feedback to improve clarity and voice.

DATA HANDLING

Students will learn to measure length, mass, capacity, time, and temperature using standard units. They will estimate and record measurements (to nearest 1/2 cm), understand relationships between units, and convert between them. Students will calculate perimeter and area, using square units for area. They will also read time to the minute on digital and analogue clocks and solve real-life problems involving measurement. This unit helps students build confidence in using measurement tools and understanding the connections between units.

NUMBER OPERATIONS

Students will fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies based on place value and operation properties. They will build fluency when recalling multiplication tables and derive related division facts. Students will apply properties of operations to solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They will use mental methods for exact and approximate calculations, solve two-step word problems, and check answers using estimation. This unit strengthens problem-solving skills and number sense.

VOICES FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Students will strengthen their Portuguese literacy skills through connections with the Year 4 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry. Using food security, sustainability, resources, access, and responsibility as meaningful contexts, students will read, discuss, and create dramatic texts, using characters and dialogue to explore different experiences, perspectives, and challenges connected to their inquiry. Through role-play and performance, they will practise communicating ideas, emotions, and viewpoints clearly and expressively. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will develop expressive reading and speaking, write and perform structured dialogues, interpret characters’ intentions and feelings, and strengthen their use of punctuation, personal pronouns, sentence types, vocabulary, and revision for clarity and effectiveness.

FUEL FOR AN ACTIVE LIFE

Students will develop their skills through PE and Swimming, with a focus on nutrition, hydration, energy, fitness, endurance, performance, and well-being. Integrated with the Year 4 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry, students will explore the connection between access to nutritious food and people’s ability to maintain healthy and active lives, considering how food and water provide the energy and hydration our bodies need for physical activity. Through PE and swimming, they will experience how healthy choices can influence energy levels, endurance, recovery, and performance. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will develop their fitness and swimming skills, recognise their bodies’ needs before, during, and after physical activity, and make increasingly responsible choices that support their health, well-being, and active lifestyles.
