WHO WE ARE

Students will explore how their abilities, interests, and environment shape their learning. They will ask questions, reflect on their growth, and connect ideas. Through hands-on activities and discussions, students will think deeply, manage themselves, and learn from one another. They will discover similarities and differences as learners and build skills for positive learning habits. This unit encourages curiosity, balance, and reflection through meaningful, inquiry-based experiences.

IDEAS ARE EVERYWHERE

Students will explore how stories work and how writers share ideas through words and pictures. They will read, listen to, and view texts to build understanding, ask questions, and create mental images. They will explore features authors use when storytelling, including illustrations, speech bubbles and word choice. They will use new words, and describe characters and settings. Students will write their own simple narratives with clear events, detail, and explore their writer's voice. They will speak, draw, and act out ideas, growing confidence in sharing thoughts and understanding how stories connect us.

PHONOLOGY

In this year-long phonics and spelling unit, students will grow into confident readers and writers. They’ll decode and spell using blends, digraphs, long vowels, and r-controlled sounds. Students will explore word families, affixes, and high-frequency words. They’ll build words by recognizing syllables, bases, and marker letters like silent <e>. By learning spelling patterns and sound-symbol connections, students will read with greater fluency and spell with increasing accuracy.

DATA HANDLING

In this integrated unit, students will explore how to organize and sort objects to solve problems. They will learn to describe chances of daily events and identify what is likely or unlikely. They will collect and represent data using diagrams, lists, and graphs. Students will ask questions, gather information, and compare results. They will work with real objects and describe patterns using simple charts. This unit builds skills in recognizing, organizing, and interpreting data from their world.

NUMBER & NUMBER SENSE

In this standalone unit, students will explore numbers and how they work together. They will count forward and backward over 100, break apart numbers and compare numbers based on tens and ones digits. Students will use symbols to show greater than, less than, or equal. They will count by twos, fives, and tens and begin to spot patterns like odd and even. This unit helps build a strong sense of number and how numbers connect.

OUR STORIES, OUR IDENTITY

Students will strengthen their confidence in using Portuguese to communicate, read, write, and express ideas about identity, family, and culture. Integrated with the Year 2 Who We Are and Where We Are in Place and Time Units of Inquiry, they will explore personal growth, family stories, cultural experiences, and connections to others through conversations, stories, reading, writing, and visual texts. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will develop oral language, reading, visual literacy, and writing skills by retelling stories, identifying key details, using richer vocabulary, decoding unfamiliar words, and writing short, well-organised texts with increasing accuracy.

GROWING THROUGH MOVEMENT

Students will develop their skills through Athletics and Aquatics while learning more about themselves as movers and learners. Integrated with the Year 2 Who We Are Unit of Inquiry, students will explore their abilities, interests, strengths, preferences, growth, and choices by reflecting on how practice, effort, technique, and the learning environment help them improve. They will set simple goals, make choices about their learning, notice progress, and build confidence and independence. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will practise running at different speeds and stride lengths, choosing an appropriate pace, combining jumps with control, throwing equipment accurately, and performing skills with increasing fluency. In Aquatics, they will develop floating, gliding, kicking, breathing, stroke skills, water confidence, endurance, and safety while identifying their own strengths and next steps.
