YEAR 1 | UNIT 4
YEAR 1 | UNIT 4
UNIT OF INQUIRY
HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES
Students will explore how stories are created, shared, and expressed. They will discover that stories have different purposes and can be told through words, pictures, movement, and music. They will see how stories connect people, cultures, and ideas. They will learn how stories are passed down over time. This inquiry will inspire creativity, communication, and an appreciation for different perspectives.
LANGUAGE
THE MAGIC OF STORYTELLING
This is a fully integrated language unit where students will explore storytelling while building literacy skills. They will engage in oral storytelling, drama, picture books, and shared writing. They will learn to structure stories with a beginning, middle, and end. They will create and share their own stories using words, pictures, and actions. Through listening, retelling, and writing, they will gain confidence in sequencing and expressing their ideas.
PHONOLOGY
In this year-long phonology unit, students will build core skills for reading and spelling. They’ll learn to hear, identify, and spell with phonemes using unigraphs, digraphs, blends, and short vowels. They’ll practice breaking words into sounds, changing phonemes to make new words, and recognizing patterns in word families. These skills will help students understand how spoken language connects to written words.
MATHS
DATA HANDLING
Students will learn to sort, organize, and understand information. They will group objects by attributes and use pictures, diagrams, and materials to show data. They will collect information to answer questions and solve problems. They will use graphs to interpret their findings and make predictions to support decisions. They will build confidence in organizing and understanding information.
FRACTIONS
Students will explore wholes and parts. They will learn that a whole can be one object or a group of objects. They will see how all parts together make a whole. Students will practice dividing objects into equal groups to share fairly. Through hands-on activities, they will learn to group, share, and combine objects in everyday situations.
PORTUGUESE
STORIES CONNECT US
Students will develop greater confidence in using Portuguese to express their thoughts, opinions, ideas, and perspectives. Integrated with the Year 1 How We Express Ourselves Unit of Inquiry, students will explore how stories help us learn about people’s lives and cultures, how stories are shared in different communities, and how storytellers use imagination to communicate ideas and experiences. Through stories, conversations, images, and investigations, students will make predictions and connections, share their interpretations, and recognise that people may respond to the same story in different ways. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will continue strengthening oral language and early literacy by listening, discussing, retelling, and responding to stories with increasing detail and independence. They will use spoken language, drawings, colours, symbols, movement, and visual clues to communicate meaning, while developing active listening, respectful interaction, curiosity, and confidence in sharing their own ideas.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
GYMNASTICS AND DANCE
Students will use movement as a way to express ideas, emotions, and stories through Gymnastics, Dance, and Aquatics. Integrated with the Year 1 How We Express Ourselves Unit of Inquiry, students will explore Function, Connection, and Perspective by creating movement sequences that communicate meaning, discovering dances and movement traditions from different cultures, and recognising that the same idea or story can be expressed and interpreted in different ways. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will develop control, coordination, balance, rhythm, and confidence as they create simple movements, combine gestures to tell a story, and share emotions with others through movement. In Aquatics, they will also use movement in water to explore themes, communicate ideas, and express feelings in creative ways.
