YEAR 1 | UNIT 1
YEAR 1 | UNIT 1
UNIT OF INQUIRY
WHO WE ARE
Students will inquire into who they are and how they connect with others. They will learn about emotions, relationships, and the impact of their actions. They will practice kindness, cooperation, and problem-solving to build friendships and resolve conflicts. By understanding themselves and those around them, they will help create a caring and inclusive community.
LANGUAGE
I AM A READER AND A WRITER
Students will discover the joy of reading and writing. They will listen to stories, join read-alouds, and engage in playful writing as they develop early reading and writing skills. They will explore different types of texts and recognize letters and sounds. They will use pictures, symbols, and words to share their ideas and create their own books.
PHONOLOGY
In this year-long phonology unit, students will build core skills for reading and spelling. They’ll learn to hear, identify, and spell with phonemes using unigraphs, digraphs, blends, and short vowels. They’ll practice breaking words into sounds, changing phonemes to make new words, and recognizing patterns in word families. These skills will help students understand how spoken language connects to written words.
MATHS
DATA HANDLING
This is an integrated maths unit where the students will learn to sort, organize, and understand information. They will group objects by attributes and use pictures, diagrams, and materials to show data. They will collect information to answer questions and solve problems. They will use graphs to interpret their findings and make predictions to support decisions. They will build confidence in organizing and understanding information.
NUMBER & NUMBER SENSE
This is a standalone maths unit where students will build number sense by counting, comparing, and representing numbers. They will count to 100, read and write numbers to 20, and match numbers to sets of objects. Students will subitize small groups and break numbers into parts. They will use math language to compare quantities and understand the order and value of numbers. This unit helps students connect number skills to real-life experiences and lays the foundation for future math learning.
PORTUGUESE
LANGUAGE, STORIES AND COMMUNICATION
Students will develop their confidence in using Portuguese to communicate ideas, feelings, experiences, and understanding. Integrated with the Year 1 Who We Are Unit of Inquiry, students will use conversations, stories, songs, images, and simple questions to explore themselves, others, and relationships. They will practise listening carefully, taking turns, asking and answering questions, identifying characters and actions, and retelling familiar parts of stories. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will strengthen early literacy skills through rhymes, syllables, familiar words, classroom labels, books, illustrations, and visual clues. They will also express their ideas through speaking, drawing, movement, songs, and shared storytelling, building a strong foundation for reading, writing, and communicating in Portuguese.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
GAMES
Students will develop their movement skills through a variety of games while learning how to play and work positively with others. Integrated with the Year 1 Unit of Inquiry, students will explore cooperation, friendship, conflict resolution, team strategies, and different roles within a group. They will practise working toward shared goals, including others, encouraging teammates, listening, solving problems fairly, and taking responsibility for their contribution. As part of their stand-alone Games learning, students will develop fundamental skills such as running, throwing, catching, and controlling different objects, while learning to adjust techniques and strategies for different games. They will also strengthen their understanding of fairness, honesty, respect, personal space, and safe participation.
