SHARING THE PLANET

Students will explore how governments and organisations work to support communities and promote peace. They will inquire into how systems function, why they exist, and how they impact people's lives. By investigating real-world issues, students will understand the causes of conflict and the power of cooperation. This concept-driven approach builds knowledge of function and causation. Students will develop communication, thinking, and social skills as they learn how to take meaningful action and contribute to a more just and peaceful world.

MESSAGES THAT MATTER

Students will explore how language shapes opinions and influences others through media, speeches, debates, and letters. They will learn to identify bias, evaluate credibility, and understand different perspectives. By crafting persuasive texts, they will use facts, emotion, and clear structure to build strong arguments. Students will develop a confident voice, make deliberate word choices, and speak with purpose. This unit empowers them to think critically, communicate clearly, and influence the world around them.

NUMBER OPERATIONS 

Students will investigate how number operations connect and help solve real-world problems. They will explore addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using models, patterns, and reasoning. Through inquiry, they will deepen understanding of ratios, order of operations, and how algorithms represent thinking. Students will develop mental strategies, estimate, and explain their steps clearly. They will build accuracy and flexibility with whole numbers and decimals, growing confidence in complex calculations through hands-on tasks and collaborative problem-solving.

TITLE

Students will strengthen their Portuguese literacy skills through meaningful connections with the Year 6 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry. Through biographical texts, students will explore the lives of people whose experiences, choices, and actions have contributed to rights, dignity, peace, and positive change. They will identify key life events and achievements, consider the challenges people faced, and explain how their actions and decisions influenced others and their communities. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will develop greater fluency and comprehension when reading biographies, organise information chronologically and into clear paragraphs, use temporal connectors, and write increasingly coherent biographical texts. They will also strengthen grammar and vocabulary while planning, revising, and refining their writing for clarity, accuracy, purpose, and audience.

LEADERSHIP,  RESPONSIBILITY AND ACTION

Students will develop their skills through Sport Education and Parkour, with a focus on leadership, responsibility, fair play, teamwork, decision-making, resilience, and safety. Integrated with the Year 6 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry, students will explore how rules, roles, leadership, and individual choices can contribute to fair, respectful, and inclusive communities. Through Sport Education, they will take on different roles, make responsible decisions, resolve conflicts, and consider how their actions affect others. In Parkour, students will assess risks, solve movement challenges, and make responsible choices that support personal and group safety. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will participate responsibly in outdoor environments, make safe choices in unfamiliar settings, reflect on the relationship between movement and the environment, and advocate for safe and sustainable physical activity.
