YEAR 2 | UNIT 6
YEAR 2 | UNIT 6
UNIT OF INQUIRY
HOW THE WORLD WORKS
Students will explore how force and motion work in everyday life. They will ask questions, test ideas, and discover how things move and why. Through hands-on investigations, students will learn to think like scientists and understand the relationship between force and motion. They will use research and thinking skills to build knowledge and solve problems. This unit encourages curiosity, deep thinking, and helps students see how science shapes the world around them.
LANGUAGE
WRITE LIKE A SCIENTIST
Students will explore how to read, write, and share information through procedural texts based on science investigations. They will ask questions, find reliable sources, and record key facts using visuals and keywords. Students will organize steps clearly, use topic-specific vocabulary and create diagrams. They will follow the writing process to draft, revise, and publish. Using transition words and clear instructions, students will create engaging how-to texts.
PHONOLOGY
In this year-long phonics and spelling unit, students will grow into confident readers and writers. They’ll decode and spell using blends, digraphs, long vowels, and r-controlled sounds. Students will explore word families, affixes, and high-frequency words. They’ll build words by recognizing syllables, bases, and marker letters like silent <e>. By learning spelling patterns and sound-symbol connections, students will read with greater fluency and spell with increasing accuracy.
MATHS
MEASUREMENT
Students will explore how to measure objects and events using tools and non-standard units. They will compare length, mass, area, and capacity using everyday items. They will use calendars to track days, months, and seasons. Students will tell time to the hour and half hour using clocks. They will estimate and compare durations of time. This unit helps students understand how we measure the world around us and why it matters.
NUMBER OPERATIONS
Students will continue to explore how numbers work together through addition and subtraction. They will build fluency adding and subtracting within 20 and use different strategies and tools to solve problems with numbers up to 100. They will learn that addition can be done in any order, but subtraction cannot. Students will solve word problems using mental math and visual models. They will double numbers and count in groups or 2s, 5s and 10s. This unit builds confidence and flexibility with number operations in real-life contexts.
