YEAR 2 | UNIT 5
YEAR 2 | UNIT 5
UNIT OF INQUIRY
HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES
Students will explore how people use imagination to create and share art. They will inquire into different art forms and how they express feelings, ideas, and emotions. Through creating, performing, and responding, students will discover how light, sound, and movement communicate meaning. They will build communication and social skills as they take creative risks and connect with others. This unit inspires expression, celebrates perspective, and helps students understand the power of art to engage an audience.
LANGUAGE
WORDS THAT PAINT PICTURES
Students will explore how writers use words to paint pictures in our minds. They will read stories and poems, ask questions, and think deeply about characters, settings, and feelings. They will build vocabulary, notice style, and discover how stories are told. Students will plan, write, revise, and share their own imaginative texts. They will use voice, descriptive language, and visuals to express ideas. Through writing, reading, and performing, they will bring their stories to life.
PHONOLOGY
In this year-long phonics and spelling unit, students will grow into confident readers and writers. They’ll decode and spell using blends, digraphs, long vowels, and r-controlled sounds. Students will explore word families, affixes, and high-frequency words. They’ll build words by recognizing syllables, bases, and marker letters like silent <e>. By learning spelling patterns and sound-symbol connections, students will read with greater fluency and spell with increasing accuracy.
MATHS
PATTERN & FUNCTION
Students will explore patterns in everyday life using objects, sounds, actions, and numbers. They will create, extend, and describe repeating and growing patterns. They will find number patterns through skip counting and odd and even numbers. Students will spot missing elements and use patterns to support addition and subtraction. They will learn that numbers can follow rules and use symbols to show them. This unit builds thinking skills through pattern discovery and prediction.
NUMBER OPERATIONS
Students will continue to explore how numbers work together through addition and subtraction. They will build fluency adding and subtracting within 20 and use different strategies and tools to solve problems with numbers up to 100. They will learn that addition can be done in any order, but subtraction cannot. Students will solve word problems using mental math and visual models. They will double numbers and count in groups or 2s, 5s and 10s. This unit builds confidence and flexibility with number operations in real-life contexts.
