YEAR 4 | UNIT 4
UNIT OF INQUIRY
WHO WE ARE
Students will explore how body systems work and support each other to keep us healthy. They will discover the role of each system and learn how to take responsibility for their well-being. Students will build research and self-management skills as they ask questions, gather information, and make healthy choices. They will connect their learning to real life and reflect on how to care for their bodies. This unit encourages balance, responsibility, and an understanding of health as a lifelong journey.
LANGUAGE
INSIDE INVESTIGATION
Students will explore body systems through their Unit of Inquiry. They will research using books, websites, and visuals to gather key facts. They will take notes, ask questions, and organize information with headings, diagrams, and clear paragraphs. Students will write a feature article about a body system, using facts, definitions, and examples. They will develop skills in paraphrasing, using technical vocabulary, structuring paragraphs, and citing sources.
MATHS
MEASUREMENT
Students will learn to measure length, mass, capacity, time, and temperature using standard units. They will estimate and record measurements (to nearest 1/2 cm), understand relationships between units, and convert between them. Students will calculate perimeter and area, using square units for area. They will also read time to the minute on digital and analogue clocks and solve real-life problems involving measurement. This unit helps students build confidence in using measurement tools and understanding the connections between units.
FRACTIONS
Students will explore fractions and decimals as ways of representing whole-part relationships. They will learn the language of fractions, including numerator and denominator, and understand the equivalence between fractions and decimals, such as 1/2 = 0.5 = 5/10. Students will compare and order fractions with the same denominator, recognize mixed numbers, and use equivalence to solve problems. They will also apply fractions to division and find fractions of shapes, numbers, and sets. This unit strengthens their understanding of fractions and decimals.
