HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES

Students will inquire into different forms of artistic expression, how people interpret and respond to the arts in unique ways, and how their own memories, ideas, and identities can inspire creative work. They will have opportunities to express themselves through various art forms and reflect on both their own creations and those of others, developing appreciation, empathy, and respectful communication in the process. They will connect their learning through field trips to museums, murals, and natural settings that highlight cultural expression and diversity.

CRAFTING FICTION

Students will explore the power of storytelling by reading and writing a variety of narratives. They will learn to ask questions, make inferences, and visualize events to understand texts deeply. As they read, they’ll notice how authors build characters, settings, and plot. These reading strategies will support their own writing as they create stories with strong structure, voice, and detail. Students will grow as both readers and writers, confidently crafting and sharing meaningful narratives.

NUMBER & NUMBER SENSE

Students will explore the base-10 system and understand that a digit’s value depends on its place—thousands, hundreds, tens, or ones, and begin to investigate decimals. They count in steps, compare numbers, and identify patterns with odd, even, and multiples of 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100. Students round numbers, find missing values in sequences, and make general statements about sums and differences. They also learn to double two-digit numbers, building strong number sense and growing confidence.

FRACTIONS

Students will continue to explore fractions and decimals as ways of representing whole-part relationships. They will learn the language of fractions, including numerator and denominator, and understand the equivalence between fractions and decimals, such as 1/2 = 0.5 = 5/10. Students will compare and order fractions with the same denominator, recognize mixed numbers, and use equivalence to solve problems. They will also apply fractions to division and find fractions of shapes, numbers, and sets. This unit strengthens their understanding of fractions and decimals.

STORIES IN MOTION

Students will strengthen their Portuguese literacy skills through dramatic texts, connected to the Year 4 How We Express Ourselves Unit of Inquiry. Using culture, nature, creativity, and different perspectives as contexts, students will explore how characters, dialogue, and performance can communicate ideas, emotions, and different ways of seeing the world. They will draw inspiration from cultural and natural contexts to create and perform short dramatic pieces. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will develop expressive reading and speaking, write structured dialogues, interpret characters’ feelings and intentions, and strengthen punctuation, personal pronouns, sentence types, vocabulary, and revision. This learning will continue into Unit 5, where students will further develop and apply their dramatic-text skills.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT

Students will develop their skills through Gymnastics and Artistic Swimming, with a focus on creativity, expression, rhythm, balance, flow, synchronisation, and performance. Integrated with the Year 4 How We Express Ourselves Unit of Inquiry, students will explore how culture and nature can inspire creative movement, using shapes, patterns, animals, natural environments, and cultural traditions as starting points for creating and communicating ideas through movement. Through gymnastics and movement in water, they will consider how different people may create and respond to performances in different ways. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will develop balances, rolls, jumps, movement sequences, body control, rhythm, synchronisation, and safe movement practices while building confidence in creating, performing, and appreciating the creative work of others.
