SHARING THE PLANET

Students will observe the cycles and patterns that shape life on Earth. They will learn about day and night, seasons, and plant growth. They will see how these cycles affect living things and their environments. They will recognize patterns and learn to adapt to change. They will think critically, ask questions, and connect ideas as they explore nature’s rhythms.

PATTERNS ARE ALL AROUND US

Students will build their understanding of letters and sounds while exploring fiction and non-fiction. They will listen to stories, engage in hands-on activities, and conduct simple research. They will explore language patterns like poetry, rhyme, and sentence structures. They will create pattern books to share information about natural cycles.

PHONOLOGY

In this year-long phonology unit, students will build core skills for reading and spelling. They’ll learn to hear, identify, and spell with phonemes using unigraphs, digraphs, blends, and short vowels. They’ll practice breaking words into sounds, changing phonemes to make new words, and recognizing patterns in word families. These skills will help students understand how spoken language connects to written words.

PATTERN & FUNCTION

This is an integrated maths unit where students will explore patterns and how they help us understand the world. They will find, describe, and continue repeating patterns by identifying their units. They will record patterns so others can follow them. Through hands-on activities, they will learn to recognize and create patterns in daily life.

NUMBER OPERATIONS

Students will explore numbers through hands-on activities, stories, and problem-solving. They will add by counting on and subtract by counting back. They will solve missing number problems, use number sentences, and see how parts make a whole. They will learn that addition works in any order, while subtraction depends on order. By visualizing numbers and practicing fair sharing, they will build confidence in using math every day.

STORIES AND CYCLES AROUND US

Students will continue developing their confidence in using Portuguese to describe, question, sequence, and share their understanding. Integrated with the Year 1 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry, students will use oral language, stories, images, and discussions to explore cycles, patterns, and changes in nature and living things. They will build relevant vocabulary, describe what they observe, put events and changes in sequence, and ask and answer questions such as who, what, where, when, and why. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will strengthen their oral language and early literacy through storytelling, rhymes, syllables, language patterns, symbols, and visual texts. They will practise retelling in sequence, describing actions and events, following multi-step instructions, and communicating their ideas through speaking, drawing, images, symbols, and collaborative discussions.

ATHLETICS AND AQUATICS

Students will develop their physical skills through Athletics and Aquatics while exploring how movement develops through patterns, practice, and healthy choices. Integrated with the Year 1 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry, students will make connections to Form, Change, and Causation by noticing patterns in running, jumping, throwing, and swimming; recognising how their skills and confidence change over time; and exploring how practice, exercise, rest, and healthy choices affect performance and well-being. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will practise running and sprinting with good posture, changing direction with control, jumping high and far with safe landings, and working with partners to improve their movement skills. In Aquatics, they will develop water confidence, movement patterns, swimming skills, and safe participation, while recognising and celebrating their own progress.
