SHARING THE PLANET

Students will explore how living things share habitats and respond to changes in their environment. They will investigate the balance of nature and how all life is connected. Through questions, observations, and research, students will learn how human actions affect the world around them. They will manage their learning and take responsibility for caring choices. This unit encourages curiosity, compassion, and a deeper understanding of how to live in harmony with the planet.

REAL LIFE INVESTIGATORS

Students will explore facts by asking questions, finding information, and using nonfiction text features. They will read books, watch videos, and make observations to learn more about the world. They will build vocabulary and organize their ideas using headings, diagrams, and keywords. Students will write simple sentences, add details, and revise their work to improve accuracy. They will create All About books, posters, and dioramas to share their learning clearly and confidently with others.

PHONOLOGY

In this year-long phonics and spelling unit, students will grow into confident readers and writers. They’ll decode and spell using blends, digraphs, long vowels, and r-controlled sounds. Students will explore word families, affixes, and high-frequency words. They’ll build words by recognizing syllables, bases, and marker letters like silent <e>. By learning spelling patterns and sound-symbol connections, students will read with greater fluency and spell with increasing accuracy.

DATA HANDLING

Students will explore how to organize and sort objects to solve problems. They will learn to describe chances of daily events and identify what is likely or unlikely. They will collect and represent data using diagrams, lists, and graphs. Students will ask questions, gather information, and compare results. They will work with real objects and describe patterns using simple charts. This unit builds skills in recognizing, organizing, and interpreting data from their world.

FRACTIONS

Students will explore fractions as parts of a whole. They will learn to recognize and name 1/2, 1/4, and 3/4, and understand that some fractions are equal. Students will find and name halves and quarters of shapes and identify when shapes are not divided equally. They will see that two halves or four quarters make one whole. This unit builds a strong foundation for understanding how we split things into equal parts.

STORIES OF LIVING TOGETHER

Students will continue building confidence in using Portuguese to communicate, read, write, and make meaning through traditional stories. Integrated with the Year 2 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry, they will use stories, discussions, reading, writing, and visual texts to explore relationships, interdependence, responsibility, and the consequences of actions. As part of their stand-alone Portuguese learning, students will strengthen oral language, reading, visual literacy, and writing by retelling traditional tales, identifying patterns and key events, making predictions, decoding unfamiliar words, and writing increasingly connected texts with descriptive vocabulary, sequencing language, punctuation, and more accurate agreement.

MOVING SAFETY IN OUR ENVIRONMENT

Students will develop their movement skills through Outdoor Adventure while learning how to move safely, responsibly, and respectfully in different environments. Integrated with the Year 2 Sharing the Planet Unit of Inquiry, students will explore Connection, Causation, and Responsibility by considering how their actions affect others and shared spaces, how different environments influence the way they move, and why responsible choices are important for safety and care of the environment. As part of their stand-alone PE learning, students will practise adjusting their movements in response to peers, land and water conditions, and changing surfaces. They will also develop awareness of safe practices, follow safety expectations in unfamiliar environments, and build confidence in adapting their movement while respecting the people and places around them.
