Module 6
Leigh Academies Trust Sports Day
On 10 July, Anning Class represented Milestone Academy at the Leigh Academies Trust Sports Day. Students took part in both a field and track event and enjoyed the opportunity to interact with so many other schools. The weather was "quite wet" for most of the day, but students and staff were resilient and in good spirits.
English
In English we have been reading and learning about the book "Leon and the Place Between". Recently a new character, a magician named Abjul Kazam, was introduced. Students used various techniques of persuasive language to make a poster to advertise a magic show. Students combined this with their continuing practice at using Canva to create their advertisements.
Inquiry Learning
We have been learning about the Holocaust and Anne Frank. The Holocaust was a tragic time during World War II when six million Jews were killed by the Nazis. Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl, wrote a diary while hiding from the Nazis, giving us a personal view of her life during this dark period. Her story helps us understand the suffering and bravery of those who lived through the Holocaust and reminds us of the importance of tolerance and human rights.
Community Learning and Skills Development
We went to Bexleyheath by bus. We explored the town centre and had a wonderful time at Tenpin Bowling. The students thoroughly enjoyed bowling and, afterward, enjoyed a meal there. It was a fantastic day, and it was lovely seeing the children interacting and having fun together.
French
We learned the transactional language required to order what we would like to eat and drink in a "salon de thé".
Maths
We used our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to find number bonds to 20.
Maths
We learned about doubles, with a focus on adding the two equal quantities together.
Maths
We have been adding two 4-digit numbers involving multiple regrouping (exchanges).
French
We started the unit by learning eleven masculine nouns with the indefinite article/determiner for popular food and drinks typically offered in a French tea room, or “salon de thé.”
English
We started exploring the book "Leon and the Place Between" by Angela McAllister. We have begun making predictions about the story and understanding the outward appearances and inner feelings of the different characters.
Inquiry Learning
We created a biography detailing the life of Winston Churchill.
Module 5
Community Learning and Skills Development
Our Community Participation day was a tremendous success, and we are pleased to share that our students' behaviour was exemplary throughout the day.
At Dartford Library, the children enthusiastically chose books to borrow and explored literature related to World War II, which greatly complemented our recent inquiry learning lessons. Their curiosity and engagement were evident as they interacted with the library staff and immersed themselves in the books.
Our visit to Dartford Market was equally rewarding. The children confidently asked stallholders questions related to various careers, linking their inquiries to our current studies on career education.
Lunch at McDonald's went smoothly, with students either purchasing their meals or enjoying packed lunches. The children demonstrated excellent manners and cooperation during this time.
In Dartford Central Park, the litter-picking activity highlighted the children's understanding of community responsibility. They worked diligently to help keep our environment clean and safe, showing a strong sense of civic duty.
Wellbeing Week
We celebrated Wellbeing Week, providing our students with a wonderful opportunity to focus on their mental and physical health. They thoroughly enjoyed visiting Dartford Central Park, and it was rewarding to see them having a great time, smiling, and interacting with each other. Additionally, they enjoyed some games, mindfulness activities, and a snack together at school.
Makaton Club
In Anning class, students have been participating in Makaton sessions once a week led by our Speech & Language therapist. This week, they focused on learning minibeast signs and played bingo to assess their comprehension. They have shown great enthusiasm and have demonstrated significant skill development in using Makaton.
Inquiry Learning
World War Two
We worked collaboratively in our teams to create a timeline showing the chronological events of World War II. This activity not only helped us understand the sequence of historical events but also highlighted the importance of teamwork. By working together, we were able to share ideas, support each other, and achieve a common goal, demonstrating how effective collaboration can enhance our learning experience.
Inquiry Learning
World War Two
We learned which countries were involved in WW2 and their role.
With the help of an atlas, we located and labelled different countries on our maps. Once identified, we coloured them according to the alliances they belonged to.
Inquiry Learning
Anning class has engaged in discussions about the qualities of good and bad leadership, attributing these traits to leaders from both the past and present.
