How the World Works
Explorers and Adventurers
Central Idea:
Explorers have opened up unknown environments of our World.
Lines of Inquiry:
People have developed ways to
navigate the globe.
Through new discoveries, people have more of an understanding
of the world we live in.
Key Concepts
Function - How does it work? = The understanding that everything has a purpose, a role or way of behaving that can be investigated.
Causation - Why is it like this?=The understanding that things do not just happen, that there are causal relationships at work, and that actions have consequences.
Responsibility - What is our responsibility? = The understanding that people make choices based on their understanding, and the actions they take as a result do make a difference.
Learner Profile attributes
Thinkers - We use our previous knowledge to help us to answer questions and overcome challenges.
Inquirers - We are curious learners and ask questions and we enjoy learning things about our world.
Knowledgeable
We learn a lot about ourselves and the world around us. With lots of practice and support we are developing our independent skills and methods to remember what we have learned.
English
In order to learn about explorers we need to complete research and explore the Non -fiction genre. We have began this by first predicting which books we felt were fiction and which were non fiction by just the cover.
We then looked inside the book, and learned what features a Non Fiction book has. We looked at each book again and sorted them into Fiction and Non Fiction according to the features.
Our non fiction text is a 'biography'. We are learning about the story of Jacques Cousteau.
Students have sorted fact from fiction in the book and they have discussed the significance of the title as well as sequence events.
Using Non fiction features to find information.
Students worked in groups to provide facts under sub headings about a chosen ship, which were good examples to how we have navigated the World and if you look closely these show how technology has developed to improve this mode of transport.
Students used skilled modelled to ask questions about animals that Jacques Cousteau discovered on his adventures. Students then used features such as contents page, Headings and sub- headings to find information to answer their questions. Students worked on their chrome books to create a fact sheet.
Independent work.
Students used clicker 8 to support with the spelling and sentence formation. All students remembered the question mark and full stop.
Maths
In Aztecs, we have used different manipulatives to work out 1/2 and 1/4s of number. We found that you can not half or quarter odd numbers equally.
Using part whole models help us to find 1/4 of number
During maths recall sessions, Aztecs have been working on addition and subtraction.
Students used their knowledge of number bonds to fill in the gaps.
Students used their knowledge of number bonds to solve word problems.
Some students used their knowledge of number to fill in the missing number in addition and subtraction sums.
People have developed ways to
navigate the globe.
First we labelled key features on google earth.
We then labelled physical features on aerial photographs.
After we looked at smaller aerial photographs.
We then used symbols to label the features on the aerial photograph.
Do you recognise the city the plane is flying over?
We have named the continents and the oceans.
I can label photographs of geographical features. I can use adjectives. I can write into a simple sentence.
Modern Foreign Languages
We are using Language Angels to support our learning in Modern Foreign Languages. This week we have looked at French Culture and had 'une baguette, un fromage and du raisin'
Independent Engineering
Between lessons, students are chosing to use their engineering skills to independently follow instructions to build knex models.
Students worked independently and investigated their countries from previous weeks and then completed their learning.
