With the arrival of World Peace Day on September 21st, EcoJIS decided to commemorate the day with a tree planting activity, including students from a range of year groups and houses. This stands by our theme of 'Peace begins with me'.
During this event, a total of 78 students — including the Outdoor Discovery Centre team, the EcoJIS team, house captains, and house Eco-Representatives – played their part in promoting biodiversity and conservation within the school. By the end of the event, JIS students had planted 21 young trees in the Outdoor Discovery Centre.
One integral part of the JIS philosophy is environmental sustainability. This commitment to promoting eco-friendly practices within the school has been reflected in our recent achievement of the Green Flag Award. Therefore, it wasn’t surprising that many students joined the tree planting event to promote peace on this symbolic day.
In addition, by participating in this event, JIS students could also support the “Plant and Care for Peace” campaign, a joint initiative established by Environment Online (ENO) and Treebuddy-Earth. In this way, the tree-planting event was representative of several crucial ideas: the importance of environmental protection, the promotion of international cooperation between schools and communities, and the appreciation of the diversity of cultures.
Tree planting has become an increasingly popular activity in the past few years. Successful initiatives such as #TeamTREE and the Plant a Billion Trees Project are a couple of notable examples.
Companies, celebrities, and countries have all supported these projects, which can improve carbon dioxide levels, thus improving the health of ecosystems globally.
According to an article by the New York Times, one common criticism of tree planting events is that they can reduce ecosystem resilience and biodiversity if the trees are planted haphazardly and are not maintained.
To solve this issue, Mr Amirol Bohari (the Outdoor Discovery Centre technician) selected a variety of tree species, both foreign and local. Moreover, he chose strategic locations for each seedling to be planted ahead of time to promote biodiversity within the garden centre.
Although 20 trees may not seem that many compared to the millions of trees planted by governments and companies worldwide, our community believes these in-school events can promote teaspoons of change.
Taking action in moving towards a more sustainable future has been a priority that JIS has always excelled in.
According to a Chinese proverb, the best time to plant a tree is not dependent on the season or the weather; the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago.
The second best? Now.
