The 2023-24 Upper Years Sustainability Team, consisting of 2 Sustainability Prefects, 16 Eco-Reps and Deputies and even more committee members truly made a significant impact on our school community this year. From growing their confidence to shaping their leadership, these roles helped every individual in our team explore a sense of responsibility while staying true to their passion for eco-friendliness.
Read about their experiences, written by them, to get an insight into life in their roles, below.
A message from the Prefects:
“We were honoured to have worked with such a passionate and driven team of Eco-Reps this year, and for that, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude. As individuals who are keen about sustainability, our roles as prefects truly allowed our creativity to take flight in every aspect of eco-friendliness. It has been an incredible experience for both of us, one filled with challenges, triumphs, and above all, a deep sense of fulfilment. From organising lunchtime lectures to leading assemblies during Earth Week and more, every initiative has enhanced our passion for environmental stewardship.
We would also like to thank Miss Jazie, who has been our inspiration from Day 0 – the role model who encouraged us to take up the challenge of being a Sustainability Prefect in the first place. It is evident that her guidance was a support system for the prefects before us to create a greener future, and we hope we have served her legacy – one of resilience, creativity and enthusiasm – justice.
As we look back on the year, we are filled with gratitude for the support and encouragement we have received from our Eco-Reps and mentors. Together, we’ve made a difference, and we are proud of what we’ve accomplished as a team.
We will forever remember the valuable lessons we learnt from our role this year. We are grateful this role challenged our leadership, organisation and confidence – traits we will carry with us forever. We are incredibly honoured and grateful to hear that we have inspired individuals in our JIS community with our passion for what we do – our mission a success!
As we hand over our positions to the new prefects Nisa and Shafiq, we are confident that they will continue to build upon and enhance the legacy we leave behind.
Thank you, JIS, for joining us on this journey towards a greener, more sustainable future.”
- Raika & Eoin (Year 13, Whistler & Swift)
A message from our Eco-Reps:
"Within the JIS community, sustainability is not just a label - it’s a commitment. Reflecting on my time as an Eco-Rep for Osprey, I am filled with a deep sense of satisfaction and pride in the collective progress we've achieved as a house. From our humble beginnings on the forest floor to reaching emergent status, every step forward has felt like a victory. This role has allowed me to connect deeply with eco-consciousness and collaborate with like-minded individuals, leaving an indelible mark on my heart. My ‘short and sweet’ eco journey would have been ‘long and bitter’ if it’s not for the support I have received from Mr Amir, our Sustainability Prefects - Eoin and Raika, Mrs Oshodi, Osprey’s eco committee, and my honourable deputy, Claire Russell. As I step back, I carry with me nothing but cherished memories."
- Shannon Lau (Year 13, Osprey)
A message from our Eco-Reps:
"During my time as the Whistler eco rep, I have experienced new responsibilities as well as developed and improved many skills that I never thought I would gain from this role. By overcoming many obstacles along the way, I think that me and Damia worked well as a team in order to manage our committee, ensure we communicated with everyone thoroughly and hear out each other's opinions and put them to action. In my experience, the overall Green Business we have come up with took up the majority of our time and effort being the eco reps and I am overly satisfied with what we’ve accomplished in order to raise funds for our house charity Bugtaw! From starting at the forest floor to working our way up to the emergent level, we have definitely learnt a lot along the way. Through the production and selling of the green business, we have gone through some stressful moments yet in the end we were highly satisfied and relieved with the outcome.
I would like to share my appreciation for my deputy eco rep Damia whom I could not have accomplished this role without. We both learnt the importance of communication and teamwork in order for our roles to go smoothly and achieve what we have today for our house. As well as the hardworking eco committee members who gave up their time to help us sell our green business and promote sustainability throughout the house. Lastly, I would like to thank Mrs Horsford and Raika for supporting and helping me and Damia throughout our journey as the eco reps of Whistler by providing us with advice and any help we needed. We couldn’t have done any of this without them."
- Haanah Hairol (Year 12, Whistler)
A message from our Eco-Reps:
"First and foremost, I want to give my deepest appreciation to my dedicated eco committee and leaders of blackbis. Your contributions are the only reason as to why I was able to get through this journey. Not only these, but also my outstanding deputy.
As an eco representative, I have gotten to experience many totally different and intriguing things that help betterment of the world. To be given the opportunity to join events such as beach clean ups, tree planting, fundraising for a cause and so much more, I have opened perspectives to things I’d never have imagined. All these experiences have deepened my understanding on sustainability and environmental issues which I will definitely hold onto for future causes.
A big thanks to Mr Amir, not only for providing me with multiple opportunities but also for offering a grand level of support and guidance throughout this journey. There could be nobody else that would make this experience as great as it was!"
- Grace Taylor (Year 11, Blackeye)
"I am filled with gratitude and pride for the strides that Ibis and Blackeye made to foster sustainability within the JIS community. Serving as your Eco-Rep has been an incredible experience, and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to each one of you for your unwavering support.
Special appreciation to Nabil, Ibis’s Eco Deputy and Grace, Blackeye’s Eco Captain for their dedication and enthusiasm, serving as the backbone for our eco-friendly initiatives. Together, we’ve not only planted the seeds of change but also watched them bloom into worthwhile results.
A big applause to our HsMs, our School’s Eco Manager, Mr Amir, and our Eco Captains, Raika and Eoin for providing us with the framework and support needed to bring our initiative to fruition. Your guidance has been invaluable.
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learnt the importance of collective action and the positive impact even small changes can make. Our house has truly embraced sustainability through events like the Pandan Ice Teh Tarik Sale by Ibis and the Plant Babies initiative by BlackBis. Indeed, these activities have brought us together and raised awareness about eco-friendly practices.
I hope the school can continue this green journey and remember that every eco-friendly choice we make contributes to a healthier planet.
Here’s to another year of improvement, learning, and sustainability!"
Gratefully,
- Aqil Pendie (Year 13, Ibis)
A message from our Eco-Reps:
"I would like to thank my deputy, Rania, and the Heron eco committee who have contributed significantly towards the House by helping out with eco events. Without their help and support we would not have been able to progress to where we are today. A special thanks to my Housemistress, Mrs Williams, and the Heron council who have also helped me along this journey.
I would like to extend my appreciation towards Mr Amir and the sustainability prefects, Raika and Eoin, for their unwavering support this past year. They have given us lots of opportunities to take part in activities such as the Tree Vitalise Campaign, setting up a green business, harvesting in the ODC and many more. None of this would be possible without their input.
The tree planting was definitely one of my highlights for this year. It was exciting to see so many Herons being so committed and working collaboratively. Seeing my house members actively take part in this activity makes me hopeful that participation in events like this will increase in the upcoming years.
Overall, becoming an Eco-rep was a learning experience. Initially, it was a step out of my comfort zone but soon came to realise that it has pushed me into becoming a better leader. Despite the many challenges, I am grateful for the different opportunities I’ve had and all the things I’ve learnt. My time in this role is definitely a memorable one."
- Tazmeen (Year 13, Heron)
A message from our Eco-Reps:
"I would like to thank my deputies, captains and Mrs Mead for all their support in projects I have been involved with as Eco-rep; I could not have accomplished many things without you guys.
Being an Eco-rep has been a new experience for me as I was exposed to a different kind of practice; the practice of sustainability. What truly attracted me to take part in this role was my passion for gardening and anything involved with plants. Upon taking on this role, I was met with the sad reality of how our environment is being treated by us. I have developed compassion for the environment and have shown this through my consecutive participation in beach cleanups and helping out in the ODC. Through this role, I learned how difficult it actually is to be fully sustainable may it be due to a lack of resources or financial issues. But despite this, Mr Amir showed us that we can be sustainable anywhere and I want to thank him for being a kind and passionate teacher who really showed us that we could be sustainable too.
I personally really enjoyed thinking of ways we could sell food products sustainably. I really loved our last sale, tropical sago as it sold out really quickly and people wanted more.
Thank you for this opportunity. I will miss being an Eco-rep."
- Marvin Santos (Year 13, Frogmouth)
A message from our Eco-Reps:
When we (Hafiy and Ayu) initially got our roles, we were strangers, each of us unaware that being eco-representatives would forge new connections. The journey unfolded in surprising ways, and we found ourselves making new friends within the ODC group and even the Eco-JIS team. Our ODC journey also introduced us to valuable lessons, including insights into stingless bees, collecting honey, and the practice of composting, which helped us overcome our fears of bugs.
One of the most unforgettable moments happened during our first beach cleanup. Not only did we all participate in Zumba, but after the cleanup, we stayed to enjoy the beach, playing in the sand, and building sand castles together!
In reflecting on our sales efforts, heartfelt gratitude is extended to Naifah, Praanjal, the eco-committee, and notably our council for their unwavering support and willingness to lend a hand, even when we ask for a lot, from baking together to carrying all the ice. Lastly, a sincere thank you to Mr Amir and Mr Roy for their warm welcome and continuous support, making our time as eco-representatives an enjoyable and memorable experience.
- Ayu & Hafiy (Year 13, Skylark & Barbet)
A message from our Eco-Reps:
"To begin, I would like to give special thanks to our eco-committee - for always having a helping hand in any project we carry out, no matter how big or small. Kingfisher would not get to where we are today without the support and contributions of everyone on the team, and carrying out activities has never been dull - always filled with laughter and high spirits. Of course, nothing beats the gratitude I hold for my deputy eco-rep. Shoutout to Najihah Nor Asman!
Learning so much from Mr. Amir in the ODC has given me valuable opportunities and experiences, and with this - I was, and am still able to contribute positive changes for the school. To be a student in a school that strives for sustainability has been incredible - selling eco-products, going on informative external trips and vitalising trees in the ODC.
Overall, being fortunate enough to be Kingfisher’s eco-rep has given me insight unique only through this role. It has been a pleasure the entire way - and being an eco-rep is an esteemed role that everyone should strive for."
- Nasriyah NorAsilin (Year 12, Kingfisher)
"I would like to say thank you to the eco committee leaders, particularly Mr Amir and those who are unfortunately no longer with us for inspiring me in the first place to take on this extremely fulfilling role of being at the forefront of helping my house (Monarch) and the school as a whole to bring more awareness on sustainable education in EcoJis and the ODC."
- Anmol Daiwajna (Year 13, Monarch)
A message from our Eco-Reps:
"Firstly, I would like to thank my deputy, Swee Ker, and the eco-committee, who have stepped up and participated in the green business as well as other eco-events and projects that we have worked on. In addition, I would like to express my gratitude towards Mr Amir and the sustainability prefects for helping Fireagle through the challenges we have faced and for always being happy to answer any questions. Of course, we could not have accomplished what we did without Mrs Prince, Mr Stirling, and the Fireagle council’s support, so a huge thank you to them as well!
The beach clean-up, selling shaved ice, and tree vitalise have been the highlights of the year; they have illustrated how seemingly small actions can have a tangible impact overall, especially when our efforts are combined. I hope that participation in these events will continue to grow in the years to come.
I have learnt and grown immensely from being an eco-rep; it has pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way, and as a result, I have become a better leader. I am truly grateful for this opportunity; managing the green business, running assemblies, and promoting sustainability has helped me show myself what I am capable of, and I fully intend to continue my efforts to preserve our planet and to encourage others to do the same!"
- Nidhi Kulkarni (Year 13, Fireback)
