The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 objectives adopted in 2015. It has been agreed to by all nations in the UN, pledging to work towards their call-to-action to end poverty and inequality, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy health, justice and prosperity.
To make the 2030 agenda a reality, strong commitment is needed from everyone everywhere.
The SDGs are a set of goals targeting every nation in the world, integrating world leaders to bring forth change. Not only does it give guidance on the next steps, it brings important topics to light, creating and raising awareness.
It is designed to accelerate the eradication of poverty, hunger, AIDS and discrimination against women and children worldwide. The SDGs are a key tool to address key issues globally, from quality education to the provision of clean water.
A huge part of the JIS motto revolves around our Polio Points system. The Polio Points system aims to aid the acceleration of the eradication of polio around the world, primarily in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Students in JIS are rewarded for their performance inside and beyond the classroom through polio points. Centering around 6 goals, actions such as answering questions in class, participating in school or house events are all recognised and rewarded.
1 set of polio points achieved = 1 vaccination
Each set of polio points earned, results to 1 vaccinated child and 1 step closer to achieving our goal of a polio-free world. As part of such a significant program, JIS students are proud to be making such an impactful difference on the lives of many.
As an educational institution, JIS students learn about more than just Biology, Math or English. Through the multitude of opportunities available on campus, students get involved and informed. Through initiatives such as the House Forest Level Awards, students are encouraged to become eco-representatives of their houses, putting themselves in the shoes of global environmental leaders. Through this role, they are able to explore various modes of sustainability, and learn real-life skills to become champions of environmental conservation.
We value equal opportunities at our school. With integrated classroom environments, students are encouraged to participate in activities, leadership roles and others regardless of their gender. We reward by skill, not gender.
JIS is actively pursuing the utilization of affordable and clean energy on campus. We have devised a comprehensive plan to install solar panels on the school's rooftops, generating sufficient power to meet the energy needs of the entire school. This initiative aimed to significantly decrease our expenditure on energy, promoting both economic efficiency and environmental sustainability.
Our community is dedicated to practising this goal through recycling. We have implemented various initiatives such as encouraging staff and students to bring their own metal cutlery, effectively reducing the need for plastic and wooden utensils. Additionally, we actively collect paper throughout the school, sending it to local companies in exchange for toilet paper, which is then used on our premises.
Furthermore, the green waste gathered by our dedicated gardeners are sent to the ODC for composting. The resulting compost then is utilized to enhance the quality of our soil at the ODC. In our continued commitment to sustainability, we are now focusing on cultivating crops that will serve the culinary needs of the JIS Food & Technology department.
Through well-celebrated events such as Peace Week, JIS students uphold the key components of this goal – promoting peaceful and inclusive societies. As mentioned above, we value gender equality in all ways. As a multicultural and diverse student body, we embrace all cultures, races and religions in a conscious effort to combat discrimination. Through weeks such as International Week, we aspire to make all students on campus feel accepted and seen.
