On the 16th of September 2023, 47 JIS students went to Jerudong Beach to take part in BGC's Beach Clean Up project. BGC (Brunei Gas Carrier) is an organisation focused on the provision of Liquified Petroleum Gas all around Brunei, thus, working closely with coastal areas. We are proud to say that students from each of our 16 houses integrated to collect 1.4 tonnes of waste!
To get an insider look at the event, we interviewed 5 JIS participants! Thank you to Ayu Rhymin, Hafiy Zaini and Bazillah Fadzillah for giving up your time to answer these questions.
Hafiy: I joined the beach clean up because I wanted to make a positive impact on the community and environment. By taking part in this event, we are not only making Brunei's shore clean, but we can also meet other individuals who share the same objectives
Ayu: I participated in the beach clean-up to help preserve Brunei’s stunning natural beauty and its marine life. This event raised awareness about our responsibility for the planet’s well-being and fosters a sense of teamwork and community engagement. Ultimately, it motivates others to realise that no action is never too small to make a difference.
Bazilah: I definetely saw common plastic items that would usually get washed away, which really made me consider and reflect upon my own waste and how I could reduce it.
Ayu: I feel that the key takeaway from the recent beach clean up is to be careful to not add to the problem. For example, using plastic water bottles and eating foods served in single-use plastic.
Ayu: Yes! I know many people (like me) initially wonder, “why should I get up on a Saturday morning for a beach clean-up?”. However, after this experience, I can proudly say that it is something everyone should try. It offers a chance to spend time by the ocean with friends, disconnect from our devices and especially give out to the community.
Hafiy: I would highly recommend people to join this activity as it could change the perspective of how people adapt their waste management and be mindful when throwing away rubbish.
Bazilah: I didn't pick this item but I saw a toilet bowl and it just really made me think of how much human impact their is on our lands.
Ayu: Car tires! We found many tires buried in the sand.
Bazilah: Definitely! I think being consistent with these events could really improve a population's understanding of beach pollution and how it affects our oceans and wildlife. Being active rather than passive is really key to making positive change!
Ayu: Hosting and attending beach clean-ups are both very important. These events preserve the environment, engage communities, and raise awareness about the consequences of littering.
