We created a Recycling Box Decorating Competition which encouraged every Whistler tutor group to decorate boxes to be used to promote recycling white paper in JIS :) Ranging from toasters to forest-themed boxes, these artistic pieces are regularly used by members of the Whistler community and the school community to encourage the reduce, reuse and recycle initiative - creativity truly has no bounds in our house.
In this event, we cleaned up a beach area with the purpose of preventing rubbish like plastic bottles, fishing nets and debris from entering the ocean and causing harm to wildlife and the community.
This campaign was held with the aim to contribute to the ongoing health and growth of previously planted trees from our tree planting events in the ODC.
Through the collective effort of Argus boys both old and young, Argus proudly sells Fresh Fruit Juice, and Handmade Bamboo Cups and Straws.
These drinks are healthy and fresh; made with fruit from local markets, with no added sugar!
One thing we are most proud of about our business is the fact that we grow some of bamboo we use ourselves, at the Outdoor Discovery Center (ODC).
One of our goals in the future is to grow more of our ingredients ourselves, for instance we are looking to plant our own lime tree.
In Argus House, we pride ourselves on our sustainable practices.
One key way that we ensure that our events, actvities and daily life is as Eco-Friendly as possible, is by having a proactive Eco Committee.
The role of our Eco Committee is to assist our Eco Captain, and Deputy Eco Captain in any environmental endeavours, as well as to spread the 'Eco Mindset' throughout our house.

Argus boys have participated in many Eco Events throughout the years, both in school, and in the local community.
From Beach Cleans,
to Tree Plantings,
and more...
The Argus Eco Captains are vital to the success of these activities, as they organise and lead at these events.
The Argus Eco Committee has also played an important role during all such occasions, as they are all seasoned veterans of the eco lifestyle, hence they can always be counted on, whether it be a beach clean, tree planting, or other event.
Argus makes sure that all positive impacts are sustained, by continuously checking up on projects we have done - we realise that there is no point in planting a tree if you are not going to look after it.
On the 18th of February 2024, Karl and Danial went for a beach clean, where they removed more than 3 cubic meters of trash from Pantai Jerudong.
Following that, Karl wrote an article (full version below) that made it into the Borneo Bulletin, which advertised one of Argus House's many achievements!
After noticing the rubbish on the beach at Pantai Jerudong and discussing what to do, two intrepid friends from Jerudong International School decided to take matters into their own hands. Argus House Captain Karl Maxwell and Eco Captain Danial bin Haslin went down to the beach on Sunday 18th February for a clean-up and collected a huge amount of trash from the beach, filling a whole trailer by themselves.
In addition to the usual suspects of plastic bottles, plastic bags, boxes, rice sacks, flip flops and old clothes, the two young men pulled multiple fishing nets out of the sand as well as a refrigerator door and a double car seat.
All in all, a good day's work was done and the area looked refreshed when they had finished.
In 2023, JIS took part in the CNN Call To Earth event, and for it our eco council put together a stunning video, containing information about the Outdoor Discovery Center (ODC), and the green activities we do there.
Six Argus lads helped in the making of the video, by describing and demonstrating some of the things that we do at the ODC, from composting to planting native species, and from rainwater collection to beekeeping.
We are truly proud of the Argonauts that were involved with this video, and we would like to say a big thank you to both CNN and our eco council for giving us this opportunity!
