On Saturday 17th September, 28 JIS students were invited to the BGC Beach Clean Up, which was part of the planet's largest cleaning campaign called BGC Coastal Clean Up Day. This event was organised by Brunei Gas Carrier Sdn Bhd and hosted at Jerudong Beach. Many JIS students, of all ages and houses, represented the school at this event and helped to collect 1.2 tonnes of waste! We decided to interview 4 of the participants to learn more about what happened. Thank you to Andra Chai, Raika Chowdhury, Raiyan Sallehin and Shin Khant Lin for taking the time to answer our questions!
Raika: The international beach clean was an opportunity for me to contribute to the fight against global warming through a teaspoon of change. It was also a community event that let me set an example for the younger girls and my peers in Whistler, as the Eco-JIS captain of Whistler house, hopefully motivating them to make a difference as well.
Shin: I joined the beach clean up because I wanted to help make small but significant changes to our environment for the better. In a sense, we left our mark by cleaning up negative marks left by others.
Andra: A car bumper! It was right in the middle of the beach but we have no idea where it came from.
Raiyan: Nothing too interesting, however, there was a group of people pulling a really large net using a car as it was stuck in the sand.
Raika: A full detergent bottle.
Shin: The most interesting trash we picked up was a swim shirt that looked brand-new and in perfect condition, but we also saw a car bumper.
Andra: To be honest, I felt quite disgusted and disappointed that people would just leave all their litter there. But afterwards I felt satisfied with myself as I helped make a difference, even if it was just a little.
Raiyan: Well, to be fair, I felt disgusted however at the same time I felt good about myself as well as the other housemates who all helped contributing to the cleanup.
Raika: I would absolutely recommend it, as it is a fulfilling and rewarding experience working together with your team and friends to do what otherwise, without our leadership, wouldn't have been done.
Raiyan: I think that everyone should try do it at least once while you get the chance at school. It's definitely an experience that you have to go for yourself when you're ready.
Raika: Cigarette butts.
Shin: As expected, plastic bags and bottles were the most common type of litter found.
Andra: Plastic bottles were almost everywhere. Bottle caps too. Even before we went to the beach you could see plastic bottles, containers and bags everywhere on the floor.
Raiyan: For our small group, we found a ridiculous amount of plastic bottles.
