At Jerudong International School, we stand by 12 Eco-School Themes, actively carrying forward 6. Inspired by the Global Sustainable Development Goals, these themes are our testament to standing with environmental conservation and protection. Students in our school implement many of these themes in their day-to-day lives, committing to doing their part in our community.
The Eco-JIS team has encouraged students to become involved in a range of environemental community services. For example, in 2020, JIS students planted trees at the Outdoor Discovery Centre and the Berakas Forest Reserve in collaboration with 'Green Brunei'.
They planted Simpur, Panaga laut and Putah Gajah, all kindly donated to us by the ministry of Forest and Environment.
We are very lucky that our school is located on the northern coast of Borneo, in a country that still has over 70% of its land covered in tropical forests.
This means that our students have many opportunities to explore areas of amazing biodiversity during the Duke of Edinburgh (DOE) expeditions, leadership training camps and subject-related field trips.

Our student-led Eco-Committes are actively involved in the environemntal management policies in JIS, The students have examined the imapct we have on the Climate, throuhg our lifestyles and the influences of our actions in our day-to-day lives.
Local experts, including those from the Iban, Dusun and Lunbawang communities, help to raise our environmental awareness and appreciate the significance of nature.
Our Eco-JIS team carry out regular environmental reviews on waste management on campus; and have used their findings to instigate changes such as banning the sales of water in disposable bottles in our school canteens.
We have also cut back on our use of other single-use plastic such as straws and food containers. To build an incentive, staff and students get discounts when they use their own containers at our salad bars, and everyone was issued a reusable cutlery pack by the school, at the start of the academic year.
All of our garden waste is taken to our Outdoor Discovery Centre, where a team of staff and students oversee it being turned into compost.
We then use the compost in our forest restoration and gardening projects.

Recently, we have collaborated with 'Reef Check Brunei' and invested in our very own plastic shredder machine. Perhaps one of the first in Brunei! Currently, we have a team of dedicated students and staff, working towards building the machine.

We have 2 different peace gardens in our school. These biodiverse gardens aim to inspire students across the year groups to appreciate and interact with nature first-hand, aiming to build a sense of acknowledgment for the importance of environmental awareness.
We have colour coded (according to the international colour coding system) our recycling bins, available to use around the school, to make recycling that much easier for our students. Continuing on our student empowerment motto, these bins have all been designed by our students.
Our schools DT and humanities department actively provide the ODC with food waste for compost. Whether that be day-to-day food waste or scrap wood, all of theme materials are put towards making our compost even more rich, to make the plants we grow, healthier.
Supported by our canteen, one of our caterers Serikandi also provide the ODC with the food waste they accumulate every day.
Other waste, such as cardboard, E-waste, glass and cans are sent to Daikyo to be recycled further.
Teachers have also been involved in recycling glass jars for their offices in every department. These jars are then used to refill coffee, sugar and tea for daily use, contribution to our zero-waste movement.
Student-led green businesses also collect jars and cardboard boxes to be reused or redecorated!
Pre-loved items such as files, folders and reusable boxes are donated to NGOs or local schools around Brunei to be put to better use, rather than being thrown away. Additionally, student councils in senior schools have also hosted thrift shops, to raise awareness of second-hand item shopping in Brunei.
To water the young trees and other plants in our Outdoor Discovery Centre, we use rainwater that we catch from the roof of our ODC hut, and the nearby sports complex.
This contributes towards using less water from the government water treatment plants, and provide the soil with neccesary nutrients and minerals that may otherwise be filtered out.
We are hoping to develop the irrgation system further over the coming months and currently have a group of students designing this.
Money raised during our annual Earth Week celebration goes to Charity Water, to provide clean drinking water to underprivileged communities around the world.
