We have been super busy with our writing so far this module! For the past few weeks we have been looking at non-chronological reports and what we they. We discovered that they are reports written about special events of significant people and the information written does not need to be in any specific order. To help us fully understand what is needed when writing a non-chronological report, we read one together and identified it's features such as headings and subheadings, factual information, pictures and key vocabulary.
Once we were able to find all of the features we need to include in our writing, we focused on developing lots of grammar and punctuation so that when we were writing our reports, we knew exactly how to write them. Our reports were about Queen Victoria. We have been able to retain lots of key information about her.
As well as writing non-chronological reports, we have written diary entries and recounts of our Victorian day. We have learned how to use capital letters and full stops correctly, we well as past tense which is very important when writing about things that have already happened It has been great to see the children really immerse themselves into the Victorian times and imagine they were a child going to work in a factory.
We kicked off this module by reading the text The Smeds and the Smoos! We have looked at Janet and Bill and discussed how they are different to us. We used out knowledge of adjectives to plan and write character descriptions.
Throughout this module we have written letters and explanation texts all about ou new inventions! We read the book 'Rosie Revere - Engineer' and was inspired to design our own wacky inventions that would help someone or something. We designed things such as cloning devices, transporters, game consoles and even solar panelled cars! We work explanation texts to explain what they are and how they work.
Once we were finished with our wacky inventions, we designed a different invention that is going to be entered into an engineering competition to be judged by real engineers! we wrote letters to the engineers to persuade them to choose us as the winning design. We hope someone in Lizard Class wins!
We have been linking our learning to our lines of inquiry which are all about adaptation of living things. We started the module by reading a book that was all about diversity on Earth. We used this text to create diary entries on meeting an extinct animal known as The dodo bird. We loved imagining we were on the island of Mauritius, observing all of the living things on the island.
After creating some great diary entry writing, we were given the opportunity to research different habitats and create an information leaflet or double page spread about two habitats of our choice. When completing our writing, we were able share our learning with the children in Bumblebee and Dragonfly class.
In Module 6 we looked at the 'Snoozeatron' machine and how it worked then wrote an explanation text to explain how it worked. We have also been developing our story writing skills so we are ready for Year 3. To finish the school year, we created double page spreads (non-chronological reports) all about technology and how it has changed over the years.
