We have been busy in maths already this module. We have looked a numbers to 20, which was a recap from Year 1, and have also been looking at the plave value of 2-digit numbers.
Within the unit of number and place value, we have been partitioning two digit numbers using part-whole models. We have been using resources such as base ten to help us with our maths learning so we understand number in a bit more detail.
As our knowledge of number and place value becomes more developed, we have been turning our focus onto comparing objects and numbers, according to their tens and ones. We looked at the greater than, less than and equals to symbols and have been using them in our learning. We have been really enjoying lots of practical lessons to help us understand a range of maths concepts.
N.C compare and order numbers from 0 up to 100; use <, > and = signs
Towards the end of our maths lessons we have been looking at addition and subtraction. We have been focusing on number bonds to 10 and 100, adding and subtracting 1s and also adding by finding the 10. We will continue this unit after half term.
So far this module we have continued with the unit 'addition and subtraction'. We have been looking at adding and subtracting across the ten and to help us work out the answers, we have been using lots of resources to help us such as base ten, counters and tens frames.
Over the next few lessons we have focused on additing and subtracing two 2 digit numbers. We have been able to learn how to use a range of methods to help us work out the answers. We have also been using lots of manipulatives to help us with exchanging because we can find that a bit tricky!
So far this module has been all about shape! We have explored a range of 3D and 2D shapes by looking at their vertices, edges, faces and sides. We have made comparisons between different shapes and sorted them according to what they look like. We have also loved making patterns with a range of shapes. This has been a really fun unit to tak part in!
Once we completed our unit on shape, we started to explore money. Our first couple of lessons focused on counting pence and pounds. We have explored a range of different coins and made certain amounts such as 20p, 50p and £20 in different ways.
Throughout Module 4 we are continuing to look at multiplication and division. We have been doing this by looking at arrays and discussing how they can help us with our times tables, repeated addition, sharing and making equal groups and doubling and halving. We have really enjoyed this unit this module and are doing really well at understanding the mathematical concepts.
As we head towards the end of the module, we have been focusing on developing our times tables skills, especially trying to answer questions more accurately and quickly on our TTRS platform. The children in Lizard Class are doing really well with their times tables and I know it will continue.
The last few lessons have been focusing on measurement. So far we have been exploring CM and M in more detail and have had lots of opportunities to explore measuring a range of different items. When measuring things in our classroom and around the school, we have been comparing measurements by using words such as bigger, smaller, longer and shorter.
For most of this module we will be learning all about fractions! We will know how to recognise fractions and find them from amounts, the different between unit and non-unit fractions and how to count fractions up to a whole number. We have had lots of fun learning about fractions and knowing the information has helped us with our assessments that we did at the end of the unit.
Now we have finished learning about fractions, we have moved onto time. So far we have looked at telling the time to o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We have been using clocks that we have in our classroom and been connect time to real life situations such as the start of the school day, lunch time and home time.
At the beginning of Module 6, we started to learn all about statistics. We have looked at block charts, tally charts and tables and have been interpreting and collecting data. This has been great to do because we were able to link our maths learning to Computing and Geography.
When we finished our learning on statistics, we moved onto position and direction. We used lots of key vocabulary such as clockwise, anticlockwise, up, down, left right, forwards and backwards. We were able to give directions to our friends within the classroom as well we move minibeasts that were on our worksheets. It was a great unit as we were able to use lots of new words and be very specific with our instructions.
Our last topic in maths has been mass, capacity and temperature. We have loved exploring with a range of scales as well as measuring liquids using different size containers.
