In our geography lessons we will be focusing on atlas identification. This means we will learn about the seven continents, oceans and seas and countries around where we live. We will be looking at lots of maps and even having a go at creating our own.
In our first lesson we looked at the different continents and where we live in the world. We were able to identify the continents on world maps.
N.C name and locate the world’s seven continents and five oceans
name, locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas
In our second geography lesson we looked at different oceans and seas around the world. We have been able to locate the five oceans and discussed where they are in the world and what countries are around them.

During Module 3 we will be developing our map skills and looking at our local area. We will be looking at key a positional vocabulary and this will be supported in other lessons such as History when using Google Earth and Computing when looking at programming.
To get us excited about Geography this module, we used Google Earth to locate where the First Flight happened.
Our next few lessons involved us looking at different maps including sketch maps, aerial maps and plan maps. We looked at different keys; what they mean and why they are important to have when designing maps of our own. To help develop our knowledge further, practised giving directions to our friends within the class using language such as forwards, backwards, left, right and also designed our own classroom maps when a colour coded key.
Module 4 is all about comparing countries! We have been looking at the United Kingdom and developing what we already know about where we live and comparing it to Malawi. Our lessons have focused on exploring both countries in isolation, then discussing what is the same and different about them. We found out that the UK and Malawi have different climates as well as a big difference in population.
As we are learning about living things and their habitats, we have been learning about animals around the world. In our first two lessons, consolidated our learning on the seven continents as well as the oceans around the world. We looked at where some animals around the world come from and matched them to their natural habitat.
As we progressed into Module 5, we have been looking at animals in their native countries, hot and cold places in relation the equator and how animals adapt in these environments.
In our Geography lessons we made rain guages to measure the amount it rains over a week. To do this, we used recycled materals and collected data on a daily basis. We then used our data and created a bar chart. It was great collected the data and was interesting to see how much it actually rains in Hoo!
