Sustainability

This is an important part of being responsible with the resources that we have. If we have a good understanding of this area then it will cost less for the department and the planet!

You will need to demonstrate:

  • Best practice in selecting materials appropriate for use
  • Understanding and following workshop recycling practices and processes

Minimise waste

  1. When you select material for a project make sure you only take what you need. If you are working on a lathe then you need enough to hold and work so you might cut enough for yourself and a colleague to cut down what is thrown out.
  2. When you cut sheet material, always cut from the edge and not the middle. This will reduce the amount of waste and means you have fewer cuts to make which makes your life easier!

Recycle the rest

Although recycling uses less energy than mining the material from the ground it still uses up valuable resources; it is better to use less than recycle more. However, what waste we do create in the metalwork room can usually be recycled. Remember to put all waste metal in the waste metal bin for recycling and try to avoid putting none recyclable waste in there.
