Tool Centring

It is very important for the cutting tool to be adjusted to the correct height, if this is not done then you risk damage to your work and to the tool.

If the tool is too high then the tip won't touch the work and instead the bottom of the tool will rub against it. This will result in noise, not much cutting and a lot of heat.

If the tool is too low then it will not cut through the centre of the work on a facing cut and will leave a 'pip' as it passes undernead the mid point

Cutting tools must be adjusted to that the cutting tip is in line with the centre of the work. This will ensure that the cutting tip is doing the cutting.

This tool is too low and a 'pip' is left

The simplest way to align a tool is to use a centre placed in the tailstock. The toolpost should be turned around so that the tool tip is touching the centre in the tailstock. Shim can be used to raise or lower the tool until it is lined up accurately.
