Knurling

Knurling is the process of applying a pattern (usually diamond but can be others too) to material in order to provide grip to the final product. This is often found on thumbscrews or handle which will be gripped by the user. Knurling requires a special tool and certain adjustments to the lathe.

To move the tool in this direction, the Saddle handle will be turned.

  1. The Knurling tool must be set to the correct height with the center pivot in line with the center of the work.
  2. There should be a minimum amount of work sticking out of the chuck. If this is not possible then the end must be supported on a live centre held in the tailstock.
  3. A slow lathe speed must be used;
  4. The tool should not stick too far out of the holder
  5. For best results an automatic feed should be used to that the pattern is even
