CAD Academy Gold

Gold Award is about creating models that are made up of different parts. You will complete this level during S2 and S3.

There are several ways of creating assemblies so you will need to read the instructions carefully before you begin.

Combined parts in 3D CAD are called assemblies. You can create assemblies in two ways, using bottom-up modelling or top-down modelling. Click here for an explanation of the difference between the two methods.

Inventor is mainly set up for the former while Onshape can easily use either method.

You should look at the help videos for Onshape and Inventor shown below before you start.

If you are using Inventor the you can download the blocks needed for each model using the links at the bottom of the page.

You should use start by creating all the models using a Top Down modelling approach first. This means you will extrude the blocks "as new" parts.

Next you should take the blocks you have modelled and create assemblies using the Bottom Up method.

When you have completed the level please show your teacher and we will check things over and issue you with your award. Then you can be added to the Academy Graduation Hall of Fame!
