Pedestal Drill

This tool is also known as a pillar drill because of the 'pillar' it is mounted on. A Pedestal drill is very useful in the metalwork room. Work can be clamped to the table to that holes can be made accurately, and because the chuck moves vertically up and down all the holes drilled will be straight. The speed of the drill can also be adjusted depending on the material being drilled and the size of hole being made.

Because the drill can take larger drill bits and spin faster than a portable drill it is important to follow extra safety rules:

  1. Always use the guard.

2. Wear goggles when drilling materials.

3. Clamp the materials down or use a machine vice.

4. Never hold materials by hand while drilling.

5. Always allow the ‘swarf’ to clear the drill by drilling a small amount at a time.
