Parting Off

Parting off is the process of cutting the finished component away from the main length of bar. Parting off is difficult and can be dangerous so great care is required. In school we only tend to part off aluminium which is softer and more forgiving on the tool and operator! The following points should be considered:

  1. The parting tool must be in good condition and should not be projecting from the holder too far
  2. The tool must be sharp and ground to the correct angle;
  3. The tool must be at the right angle and at the centre height;
  4. The cut should be made as close to the chuck as possible;
  5. The lathe must run at slow speed;
  6. The tool must be fed with a slow and even pressure and liberally supplied with cutting solution.
  7. If the tool ceases to cut, stop the lathe and check the above points.
  8. If the tool 'chatters' it is set too low.

To perform this cut the cross slide handle will be turned
