Chamfering

Chamfering is the process of removing a corner usually with a 45 degree cut. There are a number of reasons for doing this. Machined edges can be very sharp so a chamfer can be cut to make them more comfortable to hold; a chamfered end will also be easier to locate in a hole which is the reason why the end of a bolt is chamfered.

A long chamfer should be cut by tapered turning but most are only a few millimeters deep so can be done with a chamfering tool. This tool has been ground to have the tip at a 45 degree angle so that when it is offered up to the work it will produce a 45 degree cut.

This tool has a replaceable carbide tip which is set at a 45 degree angle for cutting a chamfer.
