Centre Lathe Centres

Two types of centres are used on the lathe to provide support to the material being machined. If a long piece of work is not supported it will bend away from the tool and not be machined correctly.

A dead centre will support the end of the work but doesn't move (hence 'dead') This is a simple solution but can overhead unless cooled.

A live centre spins with the work as it turns. The moving part is mounted on bearings which means there is very little friction and nothing will overheat.
