From the Nest

This year marks my fifth year as a principal, which means that many of the processes that are principal does are relatively familiar for me. I have also had the opportunity of moving to a couple of different schools over this time frame and have enjoyed seeing new processes! That said, I have never started up a school as a principal other than Riverview Middle School. I can tell you that the start up of a high school feels very different. On the first day I'm not sure I left my office until 2 PM as I met with high school students to go over their programs! Very different than a middle school where the first days are typically marked by spending time in classrooms and catching up with all kinds of summer happenings. It was an excellent learning experience for me and a reminder of the importance of lifelong learning and putting myself in the shoes of all the students in the school who are asked to grow and learn everyday!

Outside of course changes we have welcomed some new grade sevens to the building and the work on the addition continues to move ahead with the hop of completion in the spring! We have been meeting with several partners including Building Trades of Alberta and Northern Lakes College to get prepared for the opening of the Collegiate. We have plans for the second half of this year that will allow our students to explore the trades prior to the opening of the addition as well as some possibilities for explorations outside of the trades! Stay tuned!

Finally, we had a short assembly to talk about the start of the year. We talked summer highlights and how we can respect each other throughout the year as people and electronics policies amongst other things and then we had some fun with minute to win it games! It was a nice way to re connect after a summer full of individual memories! Here is to making many memories together this year. As with any year, there will be many smiles, laughs and probably the occasional frown as well! In all of it, I hope we are able to grow together!
