MSJE Parent & Student Handbook 2021-2022

Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,

What a Wonderful start to the school year it has been! Thank you to all students, families, and staff for your patience as we have been settling into our new routines. As we enter into the Fall season and wrap up our first weeks of the school year, I also want to thank each of you for working to sustain a strong home-school relationship. I encourage all families to partner with teachers and maintain open lines of communication through email or other virtual means. Unfortunately, until further notice, due to Covid protocols, we are not permitted to welcome parents, visitors, or volunteers on campus.

On Tuesday, September 7 from 6:00 - 8:15, we will be holding our virtual Back-to-School Night. Please plan to visit your child's teachers' on Zoom according to the 2021 MSJE Back-to-School Night Schedule.

This year, students will be learning about and developing good character. Each month we will focus on one of the "Eight Great Character Traits. " During the month of September, we will be focusing on Caring & Compassion. Throughout the month, students will have opportunities to earn "STAR Tickets" for being caught demonstrating excellent character. At the end of each month, students will use their STAR Tickets to enter a raffle. Additionally, each month, select students from each class will be awarded a Principal's certificate for their demonstration of excellent character at school. We encourage families to partner with us in teaching students the importance of showing good character at school, at home, and in our communities.

For any questions you may have or for more information about how you can support MSJE, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I look forward to the opportunity to partner with all members of the MSJE community to provide our students with an amazing year! GO MUSTANGS!

In Partnership,

Katy Carter, Principal

Face Coverings/Mask Guidelines

As stated in the 2021-2022 COVID-19 Safety Plan, all adults and students must wear a face covering at all times while on campus, except while actively eating or drinking, or while in a private office or alone in a classroom (staff). Face coverings should be worn properly which requires the covering of both the mouth and nose and fits snugly against the side of the face.

Please help us keep our students safe by ensuring that your child(ren) comes to school with an appropriate face covering/mask (no scarfs/ ski masks or vented masks). If we see that a child is not wearing an appropriate mask, we will provide them with an appropriate mask and ask that they wear it.

For more information on Guidance for Mask Wearing, please visit the CDC Website.

Cell Phone/Smart Watch Policy

Cell phones/Smart Watches may be brought to school for safety purposes and students must follow the following guidelines:

  • Cell phone/Smart Watch must be turned off between 8:20 AM and 2:40 PM.

  • Cell phone must be kept in the student’s backpack.

  • Cell phones/Smart Watches will not be loaned to another student.

  • Cell phones are used to make a phone call for a ride only. It is not allowed to take pictures, listen to music, call friends, etc.

  • The school is not responsible if the cell phone/Smart Watch is lost or damaged.

Students who use cell phones/Smart Watches at any time during the instructional day shall be subject to the following progressive discipline procedures:

  • First Offense: the cell phone/Smart Watch will be confiscated and sent to the office with a referral slip. Parents will be called to pick up the cell phone.

  • Subsequent offense (s) - (defiance): Additional parent contact and more severe disciplinary action including but not limited to suspension.

Parents must provide a written request ( MSJE Cell Phone/ Smart Watch Agreement form) to the school for a student to carry a cell phone/Smart Watch.

Students Leaving Early for Doctor's Appointments

Please be mindful of our policy for picking up students to attend doctor's appointments. Parents should alert teachers via email (preferred 24 hours notice) and call the office just before they arrive at school to pick up their child for an appointment. No appointment is required to pick up a child for a doctor's appointment. Once a parent has arrived at the office, the office staff will call the classroom to have the child come to the office. Parents are NOT permitted to walk to classrooms directly and must sign the student out in the red office binder.

A Note from the Hopkins Band and Orchestra Boosters...

My name is Alison Tan and I am with the Hopkins Band and Orchestra Boosters. We are reaching out to the elementary schools within our attendance area about the band and orchestra classes available to 4th, 5th and 6th graders. We would love to register as many students as possible.

For the 2021-22 school year we are offering Intermediate and Advanced Band as well as Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Orchestra. We will accept 4th, 5th and 6th graders with 0-1 year experience in the Intermediate Band class and 5th and 6th graders with 2+ years experience in the Advanced Band class. We have amazing and dedicated instructors for both of these classes that have been with this program for years and will have coaches for the instruments as needed. Please encourage your students to sign up! All classes will be on zoom until further notice.

The String Orchestra program will accept 4th, 5th and 6th graders with no experience in the Beginner Orchestra. Intermediate Orchestra students are required to have at least one year experience (4th, 5th, 6th) and Advanced Orchestra is for students with 2+ years experience and generally for 5th and 6th graders. These classes will also be taught on zoom by an instructor that has been with us for years.

I have included a pdf of the informational packet with all of the information. Students can register online here:

https://musicathopkins.com/programs/elementary-bands-orchestras/

Students will be asked to register and once classes are filled, payment instructions will go out to each student. We had listed Sept 3rd as the registration deadline but will accept students after that date as well. We just want to get kids playing music! Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Book Fair at MSJE

We’re excited to invite our students to the upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. This event is an opportunity for students to build their home libraries and further their love of reading. It is also an opportunity for our teachers to expand their classroom libraries. All purchases will benefit the MSJE school library.

After missing out on many beloved traditions, our fall Book Fair will be a familiar, welcome and safe event for students. Since volunteers are currently not allowed on campus, the In-Person Book Fair will be limited to students in 2nd thru 6th grades. Students will have an opportunity to preview the Book Fair on September 1st and will then come back another day for a 30 - 40 minute scheduled class shopping time. The In-Person Book Fair dates are Sept. 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th and 9th. The Book Fair will be held in the Library. For more information, please see the Scholastic Book Fair Flyer.

2021-2022 MSJE Office, Volunteer, and Lunch Policies

The MSJE office is open from 7:30 to 4:00. Although our office is open, we are enacting 2021-2022 revised policies in an effort to reduce the number of physical interactions due to Covid.

2021-2022 MSJE Office Policy:

  • When possible, all questions, concerns, or inquiries should be conducted virtually via email or phone.

  • School visits that require physical interactions shall be permitted by appointment only.

2021-2022 MSJE Volunteer Policy:

  • Until further notice, we sadly will not be welcoming parent/community volunteers on campus. As Covid conditions change, this policy will be revisited.

2021-2022 MSJE Lunch Policy:

  • Students will eat lunch at designated times according to the MSJE Bell Schedule. Select classes will eat their lunches at the outdoor eating area allowing other classes who will eat in the gym to spread out appropriately. No lunches are permitted to be dropped off after the start of the school day. Students who forget to bring lunch may receive a school lunch.

MSJE's School Site Council/ELAC

Are you looking for a way to support MSJE, virtually?

We are still looking for a parent/community member to serve on the 2021-2022 School Site Council. Elected members would agree to serve a 2-year term and attend virtual SSC meetings 5 times per year (3rd Wednesdays of September, October, February, March, and April, 3:00 to 4:00 PM). NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. Parent members would agree to focus on and advance the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) goals of the school for the continued growth of student success in order to close the achievement gap and enhance and enrich the school experience for all students.

We are still looking for a parent of an English Learner to serve on the District English Language Advisory Committee (DELAC) and the MSJE English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC). DELAC provides a forum for parents/guardians of English Learners to advise, assist and provide recommendations to District administration and the Board of Education for the continuing improvement of programs, services, and policies for English Learners and their families.

DELAC MEETINGS 2021-2022: All meetings will be held at 6:00 PM in the CMR at 4210 Technology Drive, unless otherwise noted: October 25, 2021, December 6, 2021, March 7, 2022, May 2, 2022

MSJE ELAC: The ELAC meetings will be held virtually (3rd Wednesdays of September, October, February, March, and April, 3:00 to 4:00 PM). At ELAC meetings, you would share DELAC information with our School Site Council which is made up of staff and other parents.

Please contact Katy Carter kcarter@fusdk12.net if you are interested.

Counselor's Corner

Welcome to an exciting and unique school year! I feel honored to be MSJE’s school counselor and look forward to meeting your child, in their class, in the upcoming weeks. My main role is to support all students in the areas of academic, social-emotional, and career development. Please feel free to browse my webpage to learn more about how I support students and families.

As we move into September, we will begin our Character Education program with caring and compassion. Therefore, our school has committed to participating in the Start with Hello Week initiative from September 20-24. This event is focused on building awareness and educating students on ways to reduce isolation to create an inclusive school community. I highly encourage all students to participate in the spirit activities throughout the week.

I am amazed by the resiliency our students displayed in settling back to campus after a challenging, and remote, school year. We appreciate and thank you for all your support in making this possible. Moving forward, it is imperative that we work together to ensure our students thrive. I would love to gather feedback through a counseling survey to learn about your child’s wellness, whether there is good news or concerns to share. This information will be confidential and used for the purpose of connecting families with resources as appropriate.

Thank you very much, once again, I look forward to a great school year!

Best Regards,

Ko Vue
