MSJE Parent & Student Handbook 2020-2021

Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,

Spring is here! I hope that you and your families are able to enjoy the beautiful weather, newly-leaved trees, and the sweet spring flowers during Spring Break!

March 13 officially marked the one-year anniversary of on-site school closures in Fremont due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I continue to be in awe of the work that our students, staff, and families have accomplished this year. Nothing this year has been easy, yet I have seen growth, adaptability, and engagement across the entire MSJE community. GO MUSTANGS!

Yesterday, Superintendent CJ Cammack updated the FUSD community with the 3/31/21 Superintendent's Newsletter | Mensaje del Superintendente | 總監的話. Within this communication, we all learned that distance learning will continue for all students for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. Certainly, this announcement is met with a variety of reactions within the FUSD community; although this decision aligns with the preferences of many families, many others may be disappointed to know that on-site learning will not occur this year. I encourage you to read the entire Superintendent's Newsletter to learn more about FUSD's focus to rapidly expand existing learning hubs and to create opportunities for students to safely gather for social interactions. Additionally, Mr. Cammack is excited to share that FUSD is making great strides for a full return to in-person learning in fall 2021.

Although it is not within my power to change these recent decisions, I am always available to listen, receive feedback, and answer questions specific to MSJE. My "door" is always open to the valued MSJE community.

In Partnership,

Katy Carter, Principal

Yearbook Orders

2020-2021 has been quite a different school year filled with new experiences and adaptations. The MSJE yearbook is also evolving and adapting to the changes we have all experienced.

Digital Zoom class pictures have been/will be captured for the yearbook. Classroom teachers will be contributing photos from the year to document our virtual experience. The 2020-2021 yearbook is also being made extra special to honor our graduating 6th graders.

Don't miss out on the opportunity to purchase a yearbook to remember this very different school-year for many years to come.

Please see this MSJE Yearbook Flier for information regarding how to purchase and customize your student's 2020-2021 yearbook.

Trimester 2 Report Cards

Trimester 2 Report Cards are now available on the Illuminate Parent Portal. Paper report cards will not be sent home this trimester.

MSJE's School Site Council

It's that time of the year to nominate (or self-nominate) parent leaders for our 2021-2022 School Site Council. Elected members would agree to serve a 2-year term and attend virtual monthly SSC meetings (3rd Wednesdays of each month at 3:00 PM). Parent members would agree to focus on and advance the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) goals of the school for the continued growth of student success in order to close the achievement gap and enhance and enrich the school experience for all students. There are currently 3 open seats which need to be filled. For those who are interested or those who would like to nominate someone else, please submit this MSJE School Site Council Nomination Form on or before May 5th.

2021-2022 Class Placement Information and Input

At this time of the year, we begin to plan for the next school year. Although student enrollment is subject to change, at this point, we look forward to having two "combo" classes for the upcoming school year. Please read this Combo Class Letter for more information.

The placement of students in classes is a complex process with many variables. Many Elementary schools in the Fremont Unified School District use the following criteria: program/student needs, student ability, student behavior, as well as ethnic and gender balance. English learners are required to be placed with appropriately credentialed teachers. Parent/guardian input in this process is valued as well. Parents/guardians may choose to complete the MSJE Parent/Guardian Input for Student Placement 2021-2022 Consideration form to describe their child's specific educational needs. This form is optional and parents/guardians should not feel they must complete this form. Input for Student Placement Consideration must be submitted no later than FRIDAY, MAY 7, 2021, BY 4:00 PM. NO FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE AND TIME.

Adventure Time at MSJE

Adventure Time extended daycare at MSJE has been closed due to the Covid-19 school closure. Dependent on interest and demand, it is possible that Adventure Time will reopen prior to the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Adventure Time is waiting to see how many parents are interested in returning this school year. Once this is known, Adventure Time will make the decision on which schools we will open.

Parents who are interested in returning can contact Janet at 510 490-7874 or my Supervisor JayJay at 510 304-3047.

For more information, please visit the Adventure Time website at https://www.adventure-time.com.

Student Council Update

Friday, April 16 is Twin Day! For this day, coordinate with a friend or fellow student, and dress up the same. Wear the same shirt, pants, shoes, jackets, hats, and more. A significant similarity has to be there for your entry to count.

Other Spirit Days to look forward to:

  • 5/7: One Color Day

  • 5/28: Sunglasses Day

The MSJE Student Council Website is accessible by students and staff. Parents/guardians will need to access the site through the student's login. Here, students can find more information about clubs, spirit days, and school activities.

The Pony Express

We are proud to present Mission San Jose Elementary's newspaper, The Pony Express! Here you will find articles, musings, cartoons and creations brought to you by our student staff. New content will be added throughout the year, so make sure to check back often. (The Pony Express will be viewable when students are logged onto their FUSD Google account.)

Contactless Library Check-Out

Did you know the MSJE library is checking out books for all Kindergarten - 6th Grade? Please talk with your students to decide if you want them to check out books. Students log into the library catalog (Destiny Discover) and put books on HOLD. Mrs. Steinberg will then check the books out to the student and place them on a table outside the library doors for parent pick up.

Library Pick Up Hours are: Monday - Thursday, 9:00am - 2:30pm

Eight Great Character Traits

Throughout the year, we will be reinforcing the importance of developing and showing good character at school, at home, and in the community. During the month of April, we will focus on the character trait, "RESPONSIBILITY." Over the next month, opportunities will be created for students to consider how to take ownership of their behavior. Together, we will build a school community in which dependability is valued.

A message to reinforce at home... Members of a community have responsibility for each other.

PTC Connections

Hello Parents,

MSJE is proud to highlight Math Counts, Math Olympiad, assemblies (drawing assembly this December), FAME, and Chess Club as PTC funded programs. Additionally, the PTC has recently approved the funding for a site license of Tynker for MSJE. The PTC is in need for more contributions as we are nowhere near our goal and would like to provide additional enrichment programs during the pandemic.

See LINK for open PTC chair positions. Let us know if a position catches your interest and you're excited to sign up. We eagerly look forward to having your expertise and participation on the committee. Together, we can achieve a bigger impact in our children's education. We sincerely hope to hear from you soon. Let us know if you have any questions.

Start thinking ahead: We are in dire need of parents joining the PTC executive board open positions if we want to sustain the PTC next year. The following positions will be open next year (and can be co-chaired this year): PTC President, PTC Vice President, PTC treasurer, and PTC secretary.

Cheers,

MSJE PTC Board in partnership with Mrs. Carter

Please email questions to msjeptcexecboard@gmail.com.

Next PTC Meeting:

Tuesday, April 13, 7:00 PM (join on Zoom)
