MSJE Parent & Student Handbook 2022-2023

Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,

I hope this newsletter finds all MSJE families happy and healthy. I continue to be so proud of MSJE students for their hard work, exceptional character, and positive behavior. As spring has come, we will continue to work hard to successfully complete the 2022-2023 school year.

As we approach the end of the school year, you can continue to have a profound positive influence on your child's success at school. Here are a few kind suggestions:

Starting in May, our 3rd-6th  grade students will begin state-mandated testing (CAASPP). Fifth-grade students will also be taking the CAST Science Test. This month, teachers will be providing students with opportunities to practice for these standardized tests.

Spring Break (April 7-14) is now just around the corner. I hope this week can provide students and families some downtime and family fun. Personally, I am excited about more sunny days and outdoor time. Wishing you all a wonderful Spring season.

In Partnership,

Katy Carter, Principal

Mustang Stampede

We are thrilled to bring back the Mustang Stampede! Our biggest fundraiser of the year will kick off in just 3 weeks on 4/19/2023.

Key Dates to remember:

Donations will go toward supporting our school and can be given throughout the entire experience. There is no pressure to give, but we invite you to help our school by sharing our fundraiser with your family and friends! Thank you for supporting our school through this important fundraiser.

SBAC/CAST State-Required Assessments

Throughout the month of May, all 3rd-6th grade students will be taking the following state-required assessments:

Prior to the May test administration, students will have the opportunity in and outside of school to practice for this assessment through the CAASPP Online Practice and Training Test Portal. (At home, students can take practice tests as a "guest user" without needing a session ID or SSID number.)

All 3rd - 6th grade students should have a personal pair of earbuds or headphones to use for testing, beginning on May 1.

Additional information about State-Required CAASPP can be found on the FUSD Website.

Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P)

Starting with the 2022-23 school year, the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) provides funding for afterschool and 30 days of intersession to provide enrichment programs for transitional kindergarten through fifth grade in California schools. At the July 27, 2022 FUSD Board of Education meeting, FUSD's 2022-23 FUSD ELO-P Plan (pdf) was approved.

Students identified "unduplicated" in FUSD can participate in the ELO-P program at no cost. Unduplicated refers to students who are designated in one or more of the following categories: English Learners, Foster Youth, homeless students, migrant students, and students who are free or reduced-price meal eligible under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). MSJE will soon be added to the list of schools that offer this program.

If a parent/guardian would like to submit a student’s name for ELO-P, please complete this form (Google Form). A submission must be done for each student individually. We will inform the parent/guardian of the student’s eligibility.

If you have any questions about extended learning programs, please contact Steven Musto, FUSD Assistant Director of Extended Learning, at smusto@fusdk12.net.

2023-2024 Class Placement Information and Input

At this time of the year, we begin to plan for the next school year...

The placement of students in classes is a complex process with many variables. Many Elementary schools in the Fremont Unified School District use the following criteria: program/student needs, student ability, student behavior, as well as ethnic and gender balance. Parent/guardian input in this process is valued as well. Parents/guardians may choose to complete the MSJE Parent/Guardian Input for Student Placement 2023-2024 Consideration form to describe their child's specific educational needs. This form is optional and parents/guardians should not feel they must complete this form. Input for Student Placement Consideration must be submitted no later than FRIDAY, MAY 5, 2023, BY 4:00 PM.  NO FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE AND TIME.

Soccer @ MSJE

We are so excited to be kicking off our 2022 soccer season (April - May).

Kids Against Hunger at MSJE

On March 9, MSJE participated in the Kids Against Hunger meal-packing event. Together, the MSJE school community raised over $5000.00 and students packed a grand total of 22,680 meals.  The meals have been shipped off to Ukraine and Haiti to help support those in need. Many thanks to those of you who made generous donations and/or volunteered for the event.

5th and 6th-Grade Promotion Ceremony

Save the date for the 5th and 6th-grade promotion ceremony. The ceremony will be held in the MSJE multi-use room on Friday, June 2 at 9:00 AM. Each student promoting will be given two tickets for audience attendance.

Have You Moved?

Please complete and email the Change of Address Form along with 2 residency proofs of your new address to our School Secretary for processing.

If you are moving across town or changing apartment numbers, FUSD Board Policy states the family must inform the school within 5 days of your moving date or of any change in circumstance which would affect their student’s residency (AR 5111.1).

Please be sure to reach out to our office if you have moved recently so that the Continuing Student Reservation Form/Proof of Residency reaches you this month. We are committed to working with you on the address change and on allowing your student to continue their current enrollment.

Counselor's Corner

Greetings MSJE Families,

Our school counselor is out on maternity leave and will return on May 1st.  There will not be a school counselor substitute in the meantime.  However, if any student experiences a crisis, there will be staff members on campus who can provide support.  If your student needs any counseling support, please contact our front office at (510) 656-1200.

This month, students will begin Unit 4 from the Second Step Curriculum. In grades K-5, students will learn about “Problem-Solving.”  At home, we encourage families to engage in conversation which reinforce their student’s learning and support additional practice beyond the classroom.  The following resources provide an overview of the ideas and concepts your student will be learning:  Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, Third Grade, Fourth Grade, and Fifth Grade.  In 6th grade, students will learn about “Managing Relationships & Social Conflict.” The lessons will provide opportunities for students to examine changes they’ve gone through and how those changes can affect their relationships.  We encourage you to continue conversations at home by sharing how one of your friendships or relationships have changed over time.  Ask your child to share how some of their friendships have changed since starting 6th grade.

Best Regards,

Ko Vue

PTC Connections

We are all looking forward to a year of partnership, involvement, and enrichment! The support provided by parents and families will continue to play an important role in our students' lives.

Thank you, in advance, for your support!

The PTC mission is to facilitate excellent communication among parents and teachers together, and to build one another up for the benefit of these amazing children! The goal of the PTC Contribution Drive is to raise and administer funds that provide enrichment opportunities to MSJE students beyond those provided by the FUSD. The PTC will react to the changing needs of our students and teachers, and focus on creative ways to complement the ever changing learning environment. And we need your support to do so!

Over the years, the PTC has funded after school programs, classroom, and school needs to promote a more advanced and holistic education for our students. Examples include STEM programs such as Math Counts, Math Olympiad and Schmahl Science; Arts programs such as FAME, Music Programs, Creative Assemblies, Teacher Allotments, School Technology, School Library, Chess and more. All funded by parents like you.

Your one-time donation for the current academic year is very important as the children’s needs are new. To donate, simply point your smartphone camera at one of the QR codes below and tap the link that pops up.

Suggested donation: $225 per student

Thank you in advance for your help!

For more information, please visit the PTC page on the MSJE Website or email the PTC at msjeptcexecboard@gmail.com.
