MSJE Parent & Student Handbook 2020-2021

Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Community,

Thank you for your continued partnership as we navigate through the challenges that 2020 has brought forth. Everyday I am amazed by the flexibility, creativity, and hard work on the part of all students and teachers. I also would like to recognize the efforts of parents/guardians who have made many changes in their daily routines to support students during distance learning. I hope you all continue to stay safe and are able to spend quality time with your family as we move through these challenging times.

On behalf of the MSJE staff, I would like to wish you and your families a very Happy Halloween. Please enjoy our Characters of MSJE Video.

In Partnership,

Katy Carter, Principal

GATE (Gifted and Talented Education)

The FUSD website is updated with the following information:

Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) provides support for gifted and talented (GATE) students through differentiated instruction. We believe that differentiated instruction not only serves the needs of our exceptional students, but also enhances the entire educational program for all students.

In February of 2020, funding for the CogAT testing was cut as part of the budget savings. While the CogAT testing has been the primary means of qualifying students for GATE identification we are now in the process of identifying an alternative way of identifying students. There will not be a test for GATE eligibility given this year. We are currently revising the GATE identification process and handbook FUSD will have an update by Spring 2021.

During the 2020/21 school year we will continue to identify 5th and 6th grade students who were not identified in an earlier grade. These students may be considered for GATE identification through the professional judgement process. Teachers and/or parents may nominate a student. A completed nomination form must be submitted by the teacher or parent to the school Principal by December 11, 2020. Principals will set up meetings with the teacher, student, and parent to discuss the student’s eligibility for GATE identification. In June 2021, parents, teachers, and students who applied for professional judgement will be informed of their child’s GATE eligibility.

Eight Great Character Traits

Throughout the year, we will be reinforcing the importance of developing and showing good character at school, home, and in the community. During the months of November and December, we will focus on the character trait, "CITIZENSHIP." At MSJE, it is important that all students learn to regard diversity as a positive quality in their classes, at their school, and in their community. This month, students will learn the importance of creating classroom communities whose members see themselves as part of an interdependent community.

A message to reinforce at home... Being a community member offers us certain rights and asks us to fulfill certain responsibilities.

Counselors Corner

Hello Mustang families!

I am so excited to announce our 15 week Mental Wellness Challenge! This challenge begins the first week of November. Each week, a new challenge that focuses on a social-emotional topic will open up and students will have the entire week to complete and submit the form. I encourage families to participate together in these fun activities! And not only are these challenges fun, but you'll earn one raffle point per completed week that will go towards a raffle (per grade level) for a special prize at the end! Please see the challenge flyer HERE.

I also want to share a few additional resources:

Best, Ms. Kuang (akuang1@fusdk12.net)

PTC Connections

Hello Parents,

MSJE is proud to highlight FAME and Chess Club as PTC funded programs. Additionally, the PTC has just approved the funding for a site license of Tynker for MSJE. The PTC is in need for more contributions as we are nowhere near our goal and would like to provide additional enrichment programs during the pandemic.

See LINK for open PTC chair positions. Let us know if a position catches your interest and you're excited to sign up. We eagerly look forward to having your expertise and participation on the committee. Together, we can achieve a bigger impact in our children's education. We sincerely hope to hear from you soon. Let us know if you have any questions.

Start thinking ahead: We are in dire need of parents joining the PTC executive board open positions if we want to sustain the PTC next year. The following positions will be open next year (and can be co-chaired this year): PTC President, PTC Vice President, PTC treasurer, and PTC secretary.

Cheers,

MSJE PTC Board in partnership with Mrs. Carter

Please email questions to msjeptcexecboard@gmail.com.

Next PTC Meeting:

Tuesday, November 10, 7:00 PM on Zoom.
