MSJE Parent & Student Handbook 2022-2023

Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,

The air has cooled, the leaves are falling, and it's starting to feel like the Holiday Season! This can be an exceptionally busy time of year. Students will continue to benefit from consistent bedtimes, activity schedules, and other daily routines.

With a focus on gratitude, I would like to acknowledge all who contribute to the amazing MSJE community. Special shout-outs go to:

  • MSJE teachers for always putting the academic and social-emotional needs of students first.

  • MSJE support staff for working as a TEAM to support students and families.

  • MSJE parents and guardians for attending parent-teacher conferences and partnering with school staff.

  • The MSJE PTC for providing SO MANY enriching opportunities for students; Chess, movie nights, assemblies, FAME lessons, Math clubs, and so much more are all possible because of their generosity.

  • MSJE Students who are exceptionally AMAZING!

Wishing you and your families a warm and relaxing holiday season.

In Partnership,

Katy Carter, Principal

GATE (Gifted and Talented Education)

Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) provides support for gifted and talented (GATE) students through differentiated instruction. FUSD believes that differentiated instruction not only serves the needs of our exceptional students, but also enhances the entire educational program for all students. In February of 2020, funding for the CogAT testing was cut as part of the budget savings. While the CogAT testing has been the primary means of qualifying students for GATE identification we are now in the process of identifying an alternative way of identifying students. There will not be a test for GATE eligibility given this year. We are currently revising the GATE identification process and handbook. FUSD will have an update by Spring 2023.

During the 2022/2023 school year we will continue to identify 5th and 6th grade students who were not identified in an earlier grade. These students may be considered for GATE identification through the professional judgement process. Teachers and/or parents may nominate a student. A completed nomination form must be submitted by the teacher or parent to the school Principal by December 15, 2022. Principals will set up meetings with the teacher, student, and parent to discuss the student’s eligibility for GATE identification. In June 2023, parents, teachers, and students who applied for professional judgement will be informed of their child’s GATE eligibility.

MSJE Student Council Updates

MSJE is excited to announce the elected 2022-2023 MSJE student council officers:

  • President: Pranav R.

  • VP: Ellie C.

  • Secretary: Eckam G. and Shriya T.

  • Treasurer: Emily J.

  • Seargent of Arms: Kaylon P.

We are very proud of the many 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who ran for an office. Whether students were elected or not, they have engaged in a valuable leadership opportunity and their effort did not go unnoticed.

Urgent Need - Noon Duty Supervisors Needed

Paid and Volunteer Positions are available for the 2022-2023 School Year! We are looking to add additional noon supervisors at Mission San Jose Elementary School. The position would be daily from 11:00- 12:45. If you are interested, please contact Katy Carter (kcarter@fusdk12.net).

MSJE Green Team

Volunteers needed... Our MSJE Green Team helps to sort and limit waste at our school. Being a part of the team is a great opportunity for students to volunteer their time to help our school as well as our environment. Groups of students in 4th - 6th grades can get involved when it is their class’s turn to pick up classroom recycling during their lunch recess. We also have opportunities for student supervisors in 2nd-6th grades to help other students sort their waste correctly at both lunch and snack recess. We welcome parent help, too! If you are interested, please contact Mrs. O’Hara at dohara@fusdk12.net.

MSJE's Health and Safety Committee

Volunteer opportunity available! We are seeking a parent to sit on MSJE's Health and Safety committee. This committee will meet in-person every other 4th Monday (3:00 - 4:00 PM) at the MSJE Library. Collaboratively, we will review and resubmit our Comprehensive School Safety Plan and consider the health and safety needs.

Please contact Katy Carter kcarter@fusdk12.net if you are interested.

Counselor's Corner

Greetings MSJE Families,

As we approach the holidays, it is a good time to give thanks for all that we have in our lives. The holidays are about sharing, caring, and spreading joy. This month, students will have the opportunity to give back to their community by participating in our Toy Drive. During the week of December 5th-9th, students can drop off new and unwrapped toys to benefit local families in need. We look forward to spreading cheer this holiday season.

I would like to share with you that I am expecting in December and will be out on maternity leave starting December 8th and returning on May 1st. During my absence, there will not be a school counselor substitute. However, if any student experiences a crisis, there will be staff members on campus who can provide support. If your student needs any counseling support during my leave, please contact our front office at (510) 656-1200.

Best Regards,

Ko Vue

PTC Connections

We are all looking forward to a year of partnership, involvement, and enrichment! The support provided by parents and families will continue to play an important role in our students' lives.

Thank you, in advance, for your support!

The PTC mission is to facilitate excellent communication among parents and teachers together, and to build one another up for the benefit of these amazing children! The goal of the PTC Contribution Drive is to raise and administer funds that provide enrichment opportunities to MSJE students beyond those provided by the FUSD. The PTC will react to the changing needs of our students and teachers, and focus on creative ways to complement the ever changing learning environment. And we need your support to do so!

Over the years, the PTC has funded after school programs, classroom, and school needs to promote a more advanced and holistic education for our students. Examples include STEM programs such as Math Counts, Math Olympiad and Schmahl Science; Arts programs such as FAME, Music Programs, Creative Assemblies, Teacher Allotments, School Technology, School Library, Chess and more. All funded by parents like you.

Your one-time donation for the current academic year is very important as the children’s needs are new. To donate, simply point your smartphone camera at one of the QR codes below and tap the link that pops up.

Suggested donation: $225 per student

Thank you in advance for your help!

For more information, please visit the PTC page on the MSJE Website or email the PTC at msjeptcexecboard@gmail.com.
