Mission San Jose Elementary School

Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! The first day of school is Wednesday, August 18. As we prepare for the much-anticipated return to on-site learning, we would like to extend our gratitude to all MSJE families for a best-as-could-be year of distance learning. All of us at MSJE look forward to welcoming our new and returning students. Throughout the year, we will be serving the needs of our students by providing additional interventions, enrichment, social-emotional learning opportunities, and character education. We all eagerly await our days that will soon be filled with rigorous academic exploration balanced with joyful moments of play, friendships, and good health.
As we embark on the 2021-2022 school year, we will continue to thrive with the anticipated support from all within the MSJE community. In order to fully support students' transition to on-site learning, we are asking that every family find a way to give back to the school that gives so much to all of our students. As the school year commences, new opportunities for supporting MSJE will be communicated. At this time, our most urgent need of support include:
School Site Council Parent/Community Membership Involvement (see more info below)
English Language Advisory Committee Membership
Additional Noon Supervisors and/or before/after school supervisors (see more below about this paid opportunity)
PTC (Parent Teacher Club) participation, membership, and financial contribution (see more info below)
For any questions you may have or for more information about how you can support MSJE, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I look forward to the opportunity to partner with all members of the MSJE community to provide our students with an amazing year! GO MUSTANGS!

BP/AR 5113.1 – Students Must Be Present the First Day of School
All students must attend live instruction on the first day of school, August 18, 2021. Students who do not attend the first day of school will be dropped and will not be guaranteed a seat at their school and may have to be overloaded to another school if classrooms at their school are filled. The only exception will be students who are absent due to illness. If a student is absent the first day due to illness, parents/guardians must notify the school every day the student is absent. Seats will NOT be held for students on extended vacations or other optional activities, whether or not the school is notified. BOARD POLICY: FUSD
Board Policy 5111.1 states that if you move, you must notify the school prior to or within 5 days of any changes in residency. If you don’t, your enrollment may be revoked.
MSJE is proud to welcome Mr. Pradeep Sinha (3rd-5th grade SDC), Ms. Heidi Ruscher (1st/2nd grade science), Ms. Theresa Bettencourt (Intervention Specialist), and Ko Vue (School Counselor).
Daily attendance and being on time are crucial factors in how successful children are in school. You are helping your children to set lifelong patterns when you prioritize their attendance in school and their arrival on time. Tardies interfere with instruction in the classroom, both in terms of the time the student is missing from the classroom and the disruption the student causes when he/she arrives. Education Code 48260.5 has strict guidelines for families to follow when truancy (absences) or tardies are a concern. A letter will be sent home to notify you when your child’s attendance record begins to suffer. Please help us to help your child learn responsible work habits by getting them to school on time every day.
The MSJE Voluntary Classroom Supply List is available on the MSJE Website. Items on this list are suggested by teachers and your contributions are greatly appreciated. Materials should be sent to school with students during the first week of school.
The MSJE office officially opens to our community on August 10, 2021. Although our doors will soon be open, we are enacting 2021-2022 revised policies in an effort to reduce the number of physical interactions due to Covid.
2021-2022 MSJE Office Policy:
When possible, all questions, concerns, or inquiries should be conducted virtually via email or phone.
Please email Shanthi Sukumar (ssukumar@fusdk12.net) for general school business
Please email Kim Strack (kstrack@fusdk12.net) for attendance-related business
MSJE Office: (510) 656 - 1200
School visits that require physical interactions shall be permitted by appointment only.
2021-2022 MSJE Volunteer Policy:
Until further notice, we sadly will not be welcoming parent/community volunteers on campus. As Covid conditions change, this policy will be revisited.
2021-2022 MSJE Lunch Policy:
Students will eat lunch at designated times according to the MSJE Bell Schedule. Select classes will eat their lunches at the outdoor eating area allowing other classes who will eat in the gym to spread out appropriately. No lunches are permitted to be dropped off after the start of the school day. Students who forget to bring lunch may receive a school lunch.
See which bus lines serve FUSD schools at actransit.org/supplementary-school-service.
AC Transit is now offering new contactless payment options.
If you have not done so already, please complete the online MAZE day process as soon as possible.
If your plan is to NOT return to MSJE for the 2021-2022 school year, please notify the MSJE office. Email: ssukumar@fusdk12.net, Phone: (510) 656-1200
Students' 2021-2022 teacher will be posted on the Infinite Campus Parent Portal beginning on Friday, August 13 at 5:00 PM.
Are you looking for a way to get paid by helping at MSJE? Consider becoming a paid noon supervisor (M-F 10:45-12:45) or help in the valet (M-F 8:00-8:30 and/or M-F 2:30-3:00). Each pays $15.00 an hour. Please contact Katy Carter kcarter@fusdk12.net if you are interested.
We are also looking for 3-4 volunteers to help with the morning crosswalks on Bryant Street. As our school continues to grow, we have more and more students being dropped off and picked up each day via a motor vehicle and can use additional adult support. Student safety is a high priority and we are reaching out to our Mission San Jose community for help. Please consider volunteering 30 minutes a day to keep our students safe. Contact Katy Carter at kcarter@fusdk12.net if you or someone you know (over 18) is interested.
MSJE needs your support! It's that time of the year to nominate (or self-nominate) parent/community leaders for our 2021-2022 School Site Council. Elected members would agree to serve a 2-year term and attend virtual SSC meetings 5 times per year (3rd Wednesdays of September, October, February, March, and April, 3:00 to 4:00 PM). NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. Parent members would agree to focus on and advance the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) goals of the school for the continued growth of student success in order to close the achievement gap and enhance and enrich the school experience for all students. There are currently 3 open seats that need to be filled. Please contact Katy Carter kcarter@fusdk12.net if you are interested.
