MSJE Parent & Student Handbook 2021-2022

Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,

I hope this newsletter finds all MSJE families happy and healthy. I continue to be so proud of MSJE students for their hard work, exceptional character, and positive behavior. As spring has come, we will continue to work hard to successfully get through the 2021-2022 school year.

Starting in May, our 3rd-6th grade students will begin the SBAC state-mandated testing (CAASPP). Fifth-grade students will also be taking the CAST Science Test. This month, teachers will be providing students opportunities to practice for these standardized tests.

Spring Break (April 15-22) is now just around the corner. Wishing you all a wonderful Spring season.

In Partnership,

Katy Carter, Principal

2022-2023 Class Placement Information and Input

At this time of the year, we begin to plan for the next school year...

The placement of students in classes is a complex process with many variables. Many Elementary schools in the Fremont Unified School District use the following criteria: program/student needs, student ability, student behavior, as well as ethnic and gender balance. Parent/guardian input in this process is valued as well. Parents/guardians may choose to complete the MSJE Parent/Guardian Input for Student Placement 2022-2023 Consideration form to describe their child's specific educational needs. This form is optional and parents/guardians should not feel they must complete this form. Input for Student Placement Consideration must be submitted no later than FRIDAY, MAY 6, 2022, BY 4:00 PM. NO FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE AND TIME.

Counselor's Corner

Greetings MSJE Families,

Spring is in the air and I feel grateful for the beautiful warm weather and extra daylight. I’d like to take this time to share some exciting information that our district plans to implement with Social-Emotional Learning (SEL). SEL aims to teach the skills that are needed to have social awareness and manage our thoughts and feelings. CASEL, the Collaborative for Academic and Social Emotional Learning, defines SEL as “the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” All these factors can affect student success in school and in life.

At MSJE, teachers and staff integrate SEL everyday through daily interactions such as helping students with conflicts, reflecting on feelings and perspectives in stories, classroom lessons, school-wide activities, etc. Parents and guardians also play a crucial role in helping children develop their social-emotional skills. I encourage you to attend the upcoming SEL Info Sessions to learn more about what you can do to foster this important learning with your students.

This month’s character trait is RESPONSIBILITY. At school, it is important for students to be accountable for their actions and make good decisions. Acting responsibly in school includes keeping commitments, taking care of belongings, making good decisions, and being dependable. At home, we encourage families to reinforce the importance of taking responsibility for actions and staying committed to our words. Here is a list of books available at our school library that you could read with your child.

Best Regards,

Ko Vue
