Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,
I am hopeful that this newsletter finds you and your family in good health.
All year long, I have been amazed by the MSJE community's response to necessary adjustments as we've endured our unprecedented year of distance learning. It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of this very unique school year. Now, we are beginning to plan for next year, expecting to be able to fully return to in-person learning. The excellence of MSJE could not be achieved without the involvement of our parent community. Please consider taking an active role in MSJE next year. Currently, there are opportunities for involvement with the PTC (Parent Teacher Club) and the School Site Council (see messaging below). Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions you may have.
Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-7! In “normal” years, teachers would be treated to food, treats, and special recognition at school during this week. Despite not being on-site, we still want to celebrate and honor our amazing teachers who have done so much this year to support our students. Below are a few things we are suggesting you do for the week of May 3-7. Be creative and have fun. Please do your best to make sure our teachers get their well-deserved appreciation!
Monday, May 3: Dress Your BEST and Be your BEST. (Wear a special outfit, shirt, tie, etc. and be on your best behavior for the day.)
Tuesday, May 4: Make something artistic for your teachers (Artwork or Poem that you email)
Wednesday, May 5: Wear MSJE school colors (blue and gold) or an MSJE t-shirt to show how much we love our MSJE Teachers!
Thursday, May 6: Teacher Shout Out – send a video/picture with why you appreciate your teachers
Friday, May 7: Send an eGift (online gift card) or email a card to your teachers
Thanks for your support.
For additional information in Chinese regarding this communication, please contact the school.

Safe Routes to School - Parent Survey
Help improve our Safe Routes to School Program! Please take this 5-minute survey about your family’s travel choices and perceptions of safety. This year, we’re also very interested in how families used active transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic, their transportation plans after in-person learning resumes, and any concerns about active transportation to and from school post-reopening. All parents who submit a survey by May 14 will be entered to win one of ten $50 REI gift cards. Thank you!
Comprehensive Health, Puberty, and Sexuality Education
Beginning on May 25, all 4th, 5th, and 6th-grade classes will receive instruction on Comprehensive Health, Puberty, and Sexuality Education (CHPSE). Please read this CHPSE Parent Notification Letter for specific information. Additional information can be found on the FUSD Health Resources webpage.
MSJE's School Site Council
MSJE needs your support! It's that time of the year to nominate (or self-nominate) parent leaders for our 2021-2022 School Site Council. Elected members would agree to serve a 2-year term and attend virtual SSC meetings 5 times per year (3rd Wednesdays of September, October, February, March, and April, 3:00 to 4:00 PM). Parent members would agree to focus on and advance the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) goals of the school for the continued growth of student success in order to close the achievement gap and enhance and enrich the school experience for all students. There are currently 3 open seats which need to be filled. For those who are interested or those who would like to nominate someone else, please submit this MSJE School Site Council Nomination Form on or before May 5th.
2021-2022 Class Placement Information and Input
At this time of the year, we begin to plan for the next school year. Although student enrollment is subject to change, at this point, we look forward to having two "combo" classes for the upcoming school year. Please read this Combo Class Letter for more information.
The placement of students in classes is a complex process with many variables. Many Elementary schools in the Fremont Unified School District use the following criteria: program/student needs, student ability, student behavior, as well as ethnic and gender balance. English learners are required to be placed with appropriately credentialed teachers. Parent/guardian input in this process is valued as well. Parents/guardians may choose to complete the MSJE Parent/Guardian Input for Student Placement 2021-2022 Consideration form to describe their child's specific educational needs. This form is optional and parents/guardians should not feel they must complete this form. Input for Student Placement Consideration must be submitted no later than FRIDAY, MAY 7, 2021, BY 4:00 PM. NO FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE AND TIME.
School Health Requirements
Here you will find a School Health Requirements FAQ. Please contact MSJE's school nurse, Ashley Greer (agreer@fusdk12.net) with any questions you may have.

Student Council Update
Friday, May 7 is One Color Day! On this spirit day, students can wear clothes that are all the same color. They can also be different shades of a color. For example, you could wear black pants and a black shirt.
Friday, May 28 is Sunglasses Day! On this day, students should wear their best or craziest pair of sunglasses. You may wear any glasses, be creative!
The MSJE Student Council Website is accessible by students and staff. Parents/guardians will need to access the site through the student's login. Here, students can find more information about clubs, spirit days, and school activities.
Contactless Library Check-Out
Did you know the MSJE library is checking out books for all Kindergarten - 6th Grade? Please talk with your students to decide if you want them to check out books. Students log into the library catalog (Destiny Discover) and put books on HOLD. Mrs. Steinberg will then check the books out to the student and place them on a table outside the library doors for parent pick up.
Library Pick Up Hours are: Monday - Thursday, 9:00am - 2:30pm
Eight Great Character Traits
Throughout the year, we will be reinforcing the importance of developing and showing good character at school, at home, and in the community. During the month of May, we will focus on the character trait, "INTEGRITY." Over the next month, opportunities will be created for students to develop their own self-esteem so they see their own worth and value as individuals and as members of a community.
A message to reinforce at home... Taking pride in our words and actions is a powerful demonstration of self-respect.
Counselors Corner
Hi all,
As we wrap up the month of April and head into our last full month of school, know that as your school counselor, I am still here to support students and families with academic, career, and social-emotional development. In April, career week was introduced and students had fun exploring various careers and their own interests. If your class did not get to it, check out the career week slides. In May, we are focusing on mental health awareness. I shared my Mental Health Awareness Month kit with teachers to use in their class. Please see these other resources shared this month:
SEL recorded lesson - Communication styles
SEL recorded lesson - Responsibility (8 Great Trait)
Career week - grade level recorded lessons and slides, interest inventory surveys, and more!

PTC Connections
Hello Parents,
MSJE is proud to highlight Math Counts, Math Olympiad, assemblies (drawing assembly this December), FAME, and Chess Club as PTC funded programs. Additionally, the PTC has recently approved the funding for a site license of Tynker for MSJE. The PTC is in need of more contributions as we are nowhere near our goal and would like to provide additional enrichment programs during the pandemic.
See LINK for open PTC chair positions. Let us know if a position catches your interest and you're excited to sign up. We eagerly look forward to having your expertise and participation on the committee. Together, we can achieve a bigger impact in our children's education. We sincerely hope to hear from you soon. Let us know if you have any questions.
Start thinking ahead: We are in dire need of parents joining the PTC executive board open positions if we want to sustain the PTC next year. The following positions will be open next year (and can be co-chaired this year): PTC President, PTC Vice President, PTC treasurer, and PTC secretary.
Cheers,
MSJE PTC Board in partnership with Mrs. Carter
Please email questions to msjeptcexecboard@gmail.com.
