Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,
During the month of October, we celebrated Unity Day and Red Ribbon Week. In this last month, our student council members were elected. The month came to an end with our MSJE Halloween parade. What fun it is to see our students engaging in school-wide events and shining inside and outside of the classrooms.
The next few months are filled with many traditions. However, some will look different this year as we continue to prioritize the health and safety of our students and staff. During the months of November and December, we will be focusing on the character trait of CITIZENSHIP. We encourage all families to continue conversations at home. What does citizenship mean for us? What are the rights and responsibilities involved with citizenship?
Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy November!

If you are unable to locate the order form, you can print this MSJE Spirit Wear Order Form. All order forms with payment must be returned to student's teacher by Friday, November 12. Throughout the year, we will encourage students to wear spirit wear or school colors (blue and gold) on Fridays.
All MSJE parents/guardians are welcome to join Mrs. Carter along with Ko Vue (MSJE School Counselor) and Kathy Blandon (Youth & Family Services Counselor) to learn about the counseling programs and systems of support at MSJE. This will be a virtual event on Zoom (Zoom join Link) on Thursday, November 18 at 9:00 AM.
i-Ready is a district-adopted assessment program that is used in grades 1-12 in FUSD for reading and mathematics. This fall, all FUSD students in grades 1-12 took the i-Ready Reading Diagnostic assessment. Students in grades 1-8 also took the i-Ready Math Diagnostic. (Students in grades 9-12 will take the i-Ready Math Diagnostic later this year.)
i-Ready provides comprehensive reports for teachers and parents. To help you understand your child’s reports, we have included the following resources:
Understanding your Child’s Diagnostic Results: English Spanish Chinese
Other i-Ready Family Resources (multiple languages available)
Video (3:47) - Understanding Your Student’s Diagnostic Data: English Spanish Chinese
(click on CC to view subtitles in English, Spanish, or Chinese)
If your child is in grade 1-8 and has completed a diagnostic assessment, the i-Ready Personalized Instruction program (My Path) will automatically assign lessons based on their results. These lessons are uniquely designed to address your child’s strengths and weaknesses. Students will have access to the lessons during the school and after school. (i-Ready does not have lessons for students in grades 9-12.)
All students in grades TK-12 are encouraged to participate in this year’s Young Authors Contest. Here (English | 中文 ) you will find the contest rules and guidelines that will help answer questions and improve the quality of your student’s story. The Young Authors Entry Form: English | español | 中文 must accompany all submissions. All MSJE student entries are due on or before Thursday, December 2 and should be turned in to the student's classroom teacher.
Each 4th - 6th grade class will send their top 2 spellers to participate in the MSJE Spelling Bee on Monday, December 6. The top 2 MSJE spellers will be invited to participate in the FUSD Spelling Bee on Tuesday, January 25. Good luck to all of our Phenomenal MSJE spellers.
Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) provides support for gifted and talented (GATE) students through differentiated instruction. We believe that differentiated instruction not only serves the needs of our exceptional students, but also enhances the entire educational program for all students. In February of 2020, funding for the CogAT testing was cut as part of the budget savings. While the CogAT testing has been the primary means of qualifying students for GATE identification we are now in the process of identifying an alternative way of identifying students. There will not be a test for GATE eligibility given this year. We are currently revising the GATE identification process and handbook. FUSD will have an update by Spring 2022.
During the 2021/2022 school year, we will continue to identify 5th and 6th grade students who were not identified in an earlier grade. These students may be considered for GATE identification through the professional judgement process. Teachers and/or parents may nominate a student. A completed nomination form must be submitted by the teacher or parent to the school Principal by December 11, 2021. Principals will set up meetings with the teacher, student, and parent to discuss the student’s eligibility for GATE identification. In June 2022, parents, teachers, and students who applied for professional judgement will be informed of their child’s GATE eligibility.
The City of Fremont’s Youth & Family Services (YFS) program is providing counseling services to our students during this school year. Counseling can help students improve relationships, increase motivation to learn and grow, build problem-solving skills, strengthen emotional regulation skills, develop healthy coping and stress management skills, and overcome challenges by becoming strong and resilient. The goal is to improve student success at school – behaviorally, academically, socially, and emotionally.
Our mental health counselor Kathy Blandon, is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm in room #13. If you would like to have your child get support from this program or you want more information about the services, Kathy can be reached by email at kblandon@fremont.gov or by phone at (510) 574-2289.
Many of you have been using the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to access important information on your student(s). Since the initial implementation of the portal in February 2021, additional information is now available. For those of you who have students in elementary school, Demographic data, Attendance, Schedules, Calendar dates, and the Message Center, which includes Announcements and Inbox notifications are available. For those of you with a student(s) in middle school, junior high, and high school there is additional information available including Assignments, Grades, Service Learning Hours, an Unofficial Transcript, and more. New Feature: The district is enabling Push Notifications the week of September 27th for parents who use the mobile app. Parents can control which notifications they want to receive and the frequency. Options are available for Assignments, Grades, and Attendance. To assist in navigating the portal and editing your settings, the district has created an Infinite Campus web page with some frequently asked questions and a document called “Campus Parent Portal Instructions.pdf”, which is a comprehensive set of instructions for navigating the parent portal. Elementary students will have a smaller subset of features as mentioned above so you will want to review just those features. If you are experiencing technical difficulties, you can email portalsupport@fusdk12.net.

Conferences will be held after school during the week of November 15. November 15-19 will be minimum days with all 1st - 6th grade students being released at 1:30 PM. Your student’s teacher will send out sign-up information in November.

November is a great month to focus on practicing gratitude. There are many health and wellness benefits associated with expressing gratitude. These benefits include increased happiness, improved relationships, sleep, and self-esteem. This month, students will be encouraged to show appreciation for the things they are grateful for.
For the months of November and December, students will focus on the character trait of “CITIZENSHIP.” At school, it is important that students work together to make a positive impact in their classroom, school and community. At home, we encourage families to engage in conversations regarding the importance of being a good citizen and how that contributes to our global community. Here is a list of books available at our school library that you could read with your child.
Additionally, I’d like to share some resources with you highlighted below:
Returning to School After COVID Parent Support Group
Online Community Tutoring Support
