MSJE Parent & Student Handbook 2021-2022

Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,

Beautiful weather, falling leaves, and the excitement of fall are in the air! I hope you are all doing well. We are now officially halfway through the first trimester. Teachers, support staff, and students have been diligently working on routines and norms as well as academics. Safety continues to be our number one priority!

MSJE has just completed "Start With Hello Week" during which students had many opportunities to get to know other students. It is great to see the beginnings of new friendships and kindness towards one another. During the month of October, we will be focusing on the character trait of RESPECT. I encourage all families to extend the conversation of "what does respect look like" at home.

October 6 is Walk & Roll to School Day. Participate by walking or riding your bike to school to celebrate our school spirit, our health, and the environment. October 20 is Unity Day. We ask for all students to wear orange to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying.

Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy October!

In Partnership,

Katy Carter, Principal

Summative ELPAC and California Science Test (CAST) Score Reports

Summative ELPAC and CAST Student Score Reports are now visible in the Illuminate Parent Portal for students who tested last year while in grades TK-7, and grade 5 respectively. After logging into the portal, select State Test Results, 2020-21, ELPAC or CAST, then Download to view a PDF of your child’s report. If you have questions about your child’s performance, please contact your teacher.

Progress Reports

Your child may have received a 1st-trimester progress report last week. Please take the time to go over this with your child as we are half-way through the trimester. Do not be alarmed if your child is not meeting all grade-level standards at this time. Our initial assessments have shown that many students are behind in one or more academic areas due to distance learning. At school, we are supporting our struggling students with appropriate interventions.

International Walk & Roll To School Day - October 6

Join MSJE for International Walk and Roll to School Day! We will celebrate our school spirit, our health, and the environment with the Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools program.

With your family and friends, you can participate by:

  • Walking or biking to and from school on Wednesday, October 6th!

  • Parking your car a few blocks away from school and walking in from there

Remember to wear your helmet and other safety gear if you are biking! Please take this time to review these pedestrian and bicycle Back-to-School Safety Tips.

Let's make this FUN! The class with the most participants will get to have "PE with the Principal."

We look forward to walking and rolling with you!

Infinite Campus Parent Portal

Many of you have been using the Infinite Campus Parent Portal to access important information on your student(s). Since the initial implementation of the portal in February 2021, additional information is now available. For those of you who have students in elementary school, Demographic data, Attendance, Schedules, Calendar dates, and the Message Center, which includes Announcements and Inbox notifications are available. For those of you with a student(s) in middle school, junior high, and high school there is additional information available including Assignments, Grades, Service Learning Hours, an Unofficial Transcript, and more. New Feature: The district is enabling Push Notifications the week of September 27th for parents who use the mobile app. Parents can control which notifications they want to receive and the frequency. Options are available for Assignments, Grades, and Attendance. To assist in navigating the portal and editing your settings, the district has created an Infinite Campus web page with some frequently asked questions and a document called “Campus Parent Portal Instructions.pdf”, which is a comprehensive set of instructions for navigating the parent portal. Elementary students will have a smaller subset of features as mentioned above so you will want to review just those features. If you are experiencing technical difficulties, you can email portalsupport@fusdk12.net.

Counselor's Corner

Welcome to Fall. October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. In efforts to show zero tolerance for bullying, MSJE will be celebrating Unity Day on Wednesday, October 20th. Unity Day is a national initiative to stand up against bullying and unite for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Students will be engaging in school-wide activities to promote kindness and inclusion. Please encourage your child to participate and wear orange to show their support on Unity Day.

This month, students will learn the importance of the character trait “RESPECT.” At school, we strive for a safe and welcoming community where everyone feels valued. When we all respect and accept each other’s differences, we can live together peacefully. At home, we encourage families to continue conversations regarding the importance of respect and embracing everyone’s differences. Here is a list of multicultural books available at our school library that you could read with your child. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Thank you.

Best Regards,

Ko Vue
