MSJE Parent & Student Handbook 2020-2021

Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Community,

I am very excited to join the Mission San Jose community for my first year as Principal and I am here to be of service to you. Under normal circumstances, I would have an open-door policy, but since we are now in a virtual learning environment, I welcome communication with you through email (kcarter@fusdk12.net). I would also be happy to setup a phone call or Zoom meeting as well. I am here to support you and your child in maximizing learning, growth, and having a positive experience this school year. Though we've started our school year with unique circumstances, I am sure students can use this as an opportunity to accept new challenges, sharpen technology skills, and practice patience and flexibility.

We have an excellent teaching staff at MSJE. I speak from direct experience when I say that each and every one of our educators is highly trained, collaborative, and have students' overall growth and development in mind. In addition to providing rigorous differentiated instruction, our teachers value the development of social-emotional, physical, and linguistic skills. Our staff has spent a great deal of time planning this year's distance learning program. Please make sure to partner with your child's teacher as we are all experiencing something that has never been done in the history of education. Please be flexible and patient, and expect adjustments as each teacher figures out what works best with their classroom learning environment. I believe we will be successful as long as we stay positive, work together, and continue to have authentic and open communication. As our Superintendent, CJ Cammack recently mentioned, "Unity," will be the key to our success this year. I look forward to an exciting year of new challenges and new learning opportunities for our entire community.

In Partnership,

Katy Carter, Principal

Parent/Guardian Protocols During Distance Learning

As we move into a new full distance learning model this year, it’s important for our parents/guardians and their families to understand and respect the legal aspects pertaining to students, teachers, and staff.

Student Confidentiality

  • All students have the right to confidentiality, which extends to distance learning.

    • Exception: By law, staff members are mandated reporters and required to report suspected child abuse, as well as safety concerns related to danger of self and to others.

  • To the extent possible, all students should remain in a confidential setting while viewing in-classroom teaching.

  • Per Education Code 51512, it is illegal to record teachers and/or students. This is a violation of student and staff privacy.

  • In-classroom teaching is for the personal use of the student for the sole purpose of distance learning.

  • Parents/guardians and family members of early elementary students may support students as they learn how to use online platforms to access learning.

  • We ask that parents/guardians who need to communicate with their student’s teacher schedule a meeting with the teacher so that the live instructional time can proceed without interruptions. All teachers have identified office hours to support students and families.

Academic Integrity

  • FUSD places a high value on academic integrity and honesty. Students are expected to use only the resources and references allowed by their teachers in completing assignments and assessments.

  • While collaborative work with other students is often encouraged and acceptable, students must follow teacher directions when told to work independently.

  • Students who cheat on assignments or assessments will be penalized.

Student Dress Code and Behavior

  • Students should keep to the dress code as they would in a physical classroom, and avoid inappropriate clothes during a live session.

  • The District has the right to monitor behavior, identify bullying, and set expectations for good behavior while using these platforms.

  • The District may use audio or video recordings when investigating possible inappropriate behavior.

Visiting the School Site

Our school sites are closed to the public but there may be instances when the site administrator will contact you or students to come to the site. In order to follow health and safety guidelines provided by the Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPHD) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH), we ask that all visitors:

  • Maintain a social distance of six feet with anyone around you. In addition, we will only allow a maximum of two visitors at a time in all school offices.

  • Wear face coverings at all times. Those without a face covering will not be allowed on any school property.

  • Limit their movement on campus to the school office only. Visitors, including parents/guardians, are not allowed to enter the school grounds or classrooms.

  • Adhere to the drop off/pick up schedules for packets and assignments as determined and communicated by each school site.

Best Practices for Students and Staff during Distance Learning

  • With an eye towards these privacy issues, we have put together the following shortlist of best practices when using distance learning platforms:

    • Avoid uploading sensitive, confidential, or personally identifiable information to these platforms whenever possible.

    • Always access these platforms from the same device (e.g., designate one computer for distance learning; do not use multiple computers or devices).

    • Regularly clear your internet history, including your browsing history, cache, and cookies.

    • Do not share your login credentials or meeting links with anyone.

    • Use an advertisement blocking program while accessing these platforms.

Change of Address/Residency

Please be reminded that it is the responsibility of parents under Board Policy 5111 to notify the school office within five (5) days if they move in or out of the attendance area. Any move within the attendance area still requires two (2) new proofs of residency to verify the new address. Failure to do so will result in revocation of the student’s placement at the school.

Reporting Student Absences

Please remember to report your child’s absence before 9:00 AM if they are unable to attend school. Email kstrack@fusdk12.net to report absence. Give your child’s name, grade, teacher’s name, date(s), and reason for absence. Your child’s education is our top priority. However, when a student is sick, bed rest at home is usually advised. If your child has a fever, he/she must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.

From the District Office - Posting of Emergency Information

Information regarding Emergency situations around FUSD such as lockdowns will be posted on the District website at https://fusd-ca.schoolloop.com/. Information will also be posted on the District Facebook page at Fremont USD and Twitter page at @USDFremont. Individual schools will also contact families via their respective communication systems as soon as it is safe to do so.

Closed Campus

MSJE and other FUSD schools are "closed campuses." This means that during normal school day hours, no visitors should be on campus. Our office is open by appointment only until otherwise communicated.

Eight Great Character Traits

Throughout the year, we will be reinforcing the importance of developing and showing good character at school, home, and in the community. During the month of September, we will focus on the character trait, "CARING and COMPASSION." Students will learn to take care of people, possessions, and the environment while showing kindness, appreciation, empathy, and compassion. Our school wide goal is to help students develop empathy and a willingness to consider the feelings and well-being of others.

A message to reinforce at home... Pay it forward. Caring is contagious.

Counselors Corner

Hello MSJE Mustangs and families!

Welcome to the 2020-21 school year! As I said last school year, I'll continue to say this year: we are all in this together and I am here to support you. As your school counselor, I support the academic, career, and social-development of all students. Services I provide include individual check-ins, academic support, social-emotional lessons, teacher and parent consultations, fun student events, and community resources.

Please take a look at my Virtual Counselor's Office and Introduction Video to learn more about counseling and how to schedule an appointment with me. Keep an eye out in the Virtual Counselor's Office and teacher emails for fun student events happening in September. For additional resources, please check out FUSD counselors' At-Home Resource List for tools for positive mental health.

I understand that this is new for everyone, and it is definitely not easy. Remember to take breaks, breathe, and reach out for support. I look forward to working with you all!

Kindly,

Annie Kuang

PTC Connections

Thank you for those of you who have already participated in the 20/21 Annual PTC Contribution Drive. The goal of the PTC Contribution Drive is to raise and administer funds that provide enrichment opportunities to MSJE students beyond those provided by the FUSD. Given our current distance learning model, the PTC will react to the changing needs of our students and teachers, and focus on creative ways to complement the new learning environment. And we need your support to do so! (see flier on the right to make a donation.)

Please visit the PTC webpage for more information.

Next PTC Meeting:

Tuesday, September 8, 7:00 PM on Zoom.
