MSJE Parent & Student Handbook 2020-2021

Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,

It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of the school year. I would like to express my deep gratitude to the entire MSJE community for your support, patience, and flexibility as we have navigated through the uncharted territories of distance learning. With all hands on deck, we have guided our students through a virtual learning adventure and now we can celebrate the successful completion of the 2020-2021 school year. WooHoo!

I am hopeful that this summer allows for all families to have some downtime away from screens. Whether you are traveling or staying close to home, I urge all of you to continue to keep safety a top priority. Personally, I look forward to a High Sierra backpacking trip with my family, and, of course, some downtime at home, too.

The first day of the 2021-2022 school year is Wednesday, August 18. As we gear up for this much anticipated full return to on-site learning, we will need the support of the entire MSJE community. Throughout the 2021-2022 school year, there will be several opportunities for parents/guardians to volunteer. We are asking that every family find a way to give back to the school that gives so much to all of our students. Currently, the PTC (Parent Teacher Club) is in dire need of volunteers; without the establishment of a new PTC board for the 2021-2022 school year, we run the risk of losing the support of the PTC. The PTC does SO MUCH for our school and students. Please read this PTC Recruitment letter from the current PTC board to learn about opportunities to support MSJE. Please read the newsletter below for other volunteer opportunities including School Site Council, noon duty supervision, and crosswalk monitors.

Throughout the summer, information regarding online MAZE day and reopening will be shared as it becomes available. Please do not hesitate to email me with questions and/or feedback. Enjoy the Summer!

In Partnership,

Katy Carter, Principal

For additional information in Chinese regarding this communication, please contact the school.

Families of grade six students - we are excited to ask you to save the date of June 9th - 9 AM -11 AM for the MSJE virtual promotion ceremony. All our grade six students, teachers, and staff have put in so much effort this year and it is almost time to celebrate this exciting milestone of moving on up to middle school. Teachers, staff, and the PTC have been working to prepare a promotion package for your student. It will be available for pick up on June 7th or 8th between 1-4 PM in advance of promotion day. A Zoom link will be sent to you at a later date along with any outstanding details. Meanwhile, give your students a big hug and hooray as they put in their final efforts crossing t's and dotting i's on their individual elementary adventures. We are all looking forward to this special day - see you then.

Special Education Recognition Awards

Each year the FUSD Special Education Department gives parents the opportunity to recognize a "really awesome person" in the life of a child in the special education program. Nominees are special people who benefit the lives of our students and demonstrate a variety of qualities/characteristics such as positive attitude, patience, willingness to listen, sincerity, graciousness, and respect.

MSJE's own Mr. Peter Maina was nominated this year. Congratulations and thank you Mr. Maina, for supporting all students and families.

Noon supervisors and Crosswalk Monitors Needed

Are you looking for a way to donate your time and/or get paid for helping at MSJE? Consider becoming a paid noon supervisor (M-F 10:45-12:45) or help in the valet (M-F 8:00-8:30 and/or M-F 2:30-3:00). Each pays $15.00 an hour. Please contact Katy Carter kcarter@fusdk12.net if you are interested.

We are also looking for 3-4 volunteers to help with the morning crosswalks on Bryant Street. As our school continues to grow, we have more and more students being dropped off and picked up each day via a motor vehicle and can use additional adult support. Student safety is a high priority and we are reaching out to our Mission San Jose community for help. Please consider volunteering 30 minutes a day to keep our students safe. Contact Katy Carter at kcarter@fusdk12.net if you or someone you know (over 18) is interested.

MSJE's School Site Council

MSJE needs your support! It's that time of the year to nominate (or self-nominate) parent leaders for our 2021-2022 School Site Council. Elected members would agree to serve a 2-year term and attend virtual SSC meetings 5 times per year (3rd Wednesdays of September, October, February, March, and April, 3:00 to 4:00 PM). Parent members would agree to focus on and advance the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) goals of the school for the continued growth of student success in order to close the achievement gap and enhance and enrich the school experience for all students. There are currently 3 open seats that need to be filled. For those who are interested or those who would like to nominate someone else, please submit this MSJE School Site Council Nomination Form on or before June 9th (deadline extended.)

Grab and Go Meals

The current Grab and Go drive-through meal distribution for the 2020-2021 school year will have its last day on June 7th, and summer meal distribution will begin on June 16th.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has extended the Seamless Summer Option waiver through summer to provide free meals for everyone 18 years old and younger. The waiver also continues the allowance of meals for weekends and holidays (ie July 4th) during the summer.

FUSD will be serving meals throughout the summer at 5 school sites, every Wednesday from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, beginning on June 16th. The 5 meal distribution school sites are Washington High School, Cabrillo Elementary, Kennedy High School, Irvington High School, and Leitch Elementary. A seven-day meal kit with breakfasts and lunches will be distributed once a week on Wednesday. An alternate pick-up time can be arranged for anyone unable to come to the Wednesday meal distribution.

Read-to-eat lunches will be provided to Extended School Year (ESY) summer students to eat during their brunch break.

Once weekly McKinney-Vento home delivery of 7 days worth of meals will continue throughout summer.

Counselor's Corner

Hello Mustangs and families,

We made it to the end of the year! It's been quite a year and I am blown away by your resilience in navigating distance learning. Here are a few last resources I would like to share with you all:

  • How To Talk To Your Kids - slides: I created this presentation earlier this year with collaboration of my other school's PTA. This slide deck goes over tips and strategies on how to talk to your kids about violence, crime, and current events. It can be a difficult task so I hope these resources are helpful.

  • HUME Center's South Asian Community Health Program: Many of you are aware of the heartbreaking news regarding the COVID-19 surge in India and many of our students, families, and community may identify as Indian. The HUME Center provides parent support groups, coping skills workshops, and therapy services for the South Asian community.

  • Recorded SEL lessons:

Thank you,

Annie Kuang
