Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,
Wishing you and your families a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2023!
I am hopeful your winter break provided the opportunity to spend quality time with your family and friends. In partnership with families, we look forward to welcoming students back in 2023!
From a weather standpoint, it has been quite a wild start to the new year. As we prepare to return to school on January 9, please be safe and allow extra time for travel when rain and flooding occur. To ensure that students arrive at school on time, we recommend that students are dropped off from 8:05-8:15. Students are encouraged to bring rain jackets and umbrellas when rain is expected. At school, we will have indoor lunch and recess as needed.
In Partnership,
Katy Carter, Principal

FUSD is participating in a state program to provide free at-home test kits to each preK-12 student (ages 2+) and staff member to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Students were provided two tests to use before returning from Winter Break. The first test is meant to be administered January 8, 2023, the second on Monday, January 9 before students or staff return to sites. If either test is positive, please contact your student’s school for information about returning to school or work.
Participation in this program is optional. FUSD will not require proof of a negative test for students. However, students with a positive test result, any COVID-19 symptoms, and/or a known exposure to someone with COVID-19 must follow the student flowchart before returning to campus.
Please join Superintendent CJ Cammack for a State of the District presentation on January 18, 2023 from 6-7pm, with updates on student support, academics, budget, facilities and more. Visit www.fremont.k12.ca.us/series to submit questions or comments that may be addressed during the presentation, and to access the virtual event on January 18.

We are thrilled to welcome back parent volunteers for the 2022-2023 school year!
We require that all MSJE volunteers:
have pre-approval of teacher/principal
sign in and out at the office
wear a visitor badge at all times
submit an application through CiviCore
Volunteers who are transporting students must submit proof of insurance
CiviCore applications are good for 1 year and all FUSD children (even if at different schools)
Science Camp chaperone volunteers who are independently supervising students must also undergo fingerprinting and a background check.
For more information, please see the Volunteer Page of the FUSD Website.
Congratulations to MSJE’s top spellers! We are proud of all 14 students who participated in last week’s Spelling Bee. 6th grader Yajath B. is our school champion and 4th grader Pranavi P. is our 2nd-place winner. They will both be representing MSJE at the FUSD Spelling Bee on January 17 at Weibel Elementary School.
It is MSJE tradition that graduating 6th graders are promoted to Hopkins Junior High in a special ceremony each year. This year we will be including our 5th graders in the ceremony. Yay!
Each year, the promotion ceremony is fully set up and run by grade level parent volunteers in partnership with the PTC and 5th and 6th-grade staff. We need several volunteers to plan, coordinate and lead the ceremony in June.
Please sign up here to volunteer for the ceremony.
This is a truly special year since this will be our last batch of 6th graders and the first ever batch of 5th graders from MSJE to get promoted to Hopkins. Therefore, we request the participation and support of all 5th and 6th grade families to make this a fun and memorable celebration for our graduating children and families.
Thank you,
MSJE Parent Teacher Committee

Greetings MSJE Families,
Our school counselor is out on maternity leave and will return on May 1st. There will not be a school counselor substitute in the meantime. However, if any student experiences a crisis, there will be staff members on campus who can provide support. If your student needs any counseling support, please contact our front office at (510) 656-1200.
This month, students will begin Unit 3 from the Second Step Curriculum. In grades K-5, students will learn about “Empathy & Kindness.” At home, we encourage families to engage in conversation which reinforce their student’s learning and support additional practice beyond the classroom. The following resources provide an overview of the ideas and concepts your student will be learning: Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, Third Grade, Fourth Grade, and Fifth Grade. In 6th grade, students will learn about “Thoughts, Emotions & Decisions.” The lessons will provide opportunities for students to recognize the kind of information their emotions can give them in different situations and how that information can be useful. I encourage you to continue conversations at home by asking your child what type of emotions they feel. Tell them the emotions you feel. What information did they get from those emotions? What did your emotions tell you?
Are you interested in learning more about how you can help your child develop emotional intelligence? There will be a Parent Workshop on January 19th from 6:30-7:15 pm facilitated by elementary counselors to provide strategies on how to support your child.
Best Regards,
Ko Vue

We are all looking forward to a year of partnership, involvement, and enrichment! The support provided by parents and families will continue to play an important role in our students' lives.
Thank you, in advance, for your support!
The PTC mission is to facilitate excellent communication among parents and teachers together, and to build one another up for the benefit of these amazing children! The goal of the PTC Contribution Drive is to raise and administer funds that provide enrichment opportunities to MSJE students beyond those provided by the FUSD. The PTC will react to the changing needs of our students and teachers, and focus on creative ways to complement the ever changing learning environment. And we need your support to do so!
Over the years, the PTC has funded after school programs, classroom, and school needs to promote a more advanced and holistic education for our students. Examples include STEM programs such as Math Counts, Math Olympiad and Schmahl Science; Arts programs such as FAME, Music Programs, Creative Assemblies, Teacher Allotments, School Technology, School Library, Chess and more. All funded by parents like you.
Your one-time donation for the current academic year is very important as the children’s needs are new. To donate, simply point your smartphone camera at one of the QR codes below and tap the link that pops up.
Suggested donation: $225 per student
Thank you in advance for your help!
