MSJE Parent & Student Handbook 2023-2024

Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,

Beautiful weather, falling leaves, and the excitement of fall are in the air! I hope you are all doing well. We are now officially halfway through the first trimester. We are proud of the hard work and excellent progress we have already seen from our students.

MSJE has just completed "Start With Hello Week" during which students had many opportunities to get to know other students. It is great to see the beginnings of new friendships and kindness towards one another.

October 4 is International Walk & Roll to School Day. Students are encouraged to participate by walking or riding their bikes to school to celebrate our school spirit, our health, and the environment. October 18 is Unity Day. We ask for all students to wear orange to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying.

For any questions you may have or for more information about how you can support MSJE, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I look forward to the opportunity to partner with all members of the MSJE community to provide our students with an amazing year!

Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy October!

In Partnership,

Katy Carter, Principal

Halloween at MSJE

Our Annual Pumpkin Carving & Decorating Activity will continue this year.  Students can bring a decorated or carved pumpkin to enter the contest.  We added a new category for a green ribbon award for the best-decorated pumpkin using recycled materials. Participating students must bring their pumpkins to school on October 31st for judging.  The pumpkins will be displayed for our Halloween Parade.  We look forward to seeing the creativity.

The MSJE Halloween Parade will occur on Monday, October 31 at 1:00 PM. This will be an outdoor event for staff and students. Parents are welcome to observe the parade on campus in designated areas.

Halloween Costumes: Dressing for Halloween is a fun and festive part of October that many of our students and staff are looking forward to. Please carefully review the MSJE Halloween Dressing and Celebration guidelines.

GATE (Gifted and Talented Education)

Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) provides support for gifted and talented (GATE) students through differentiated instruction. FUSD believes that differentiated instruction not only serves the needs of our exceptional students, but also enhances the entire educational program for all students. In February of 2020, funding for the CogAT testing was cut as part of the budget savings. While the CogAT testing has been the primary means of qualifying students for GATE identification we are now in the process of identifying an alternative way of identifying students. There will not be a test for GATE eligibility given this year.

During the 2023/2024 school year we will continue to identify 5th grade students who were not identified in an earlier grade. These students may be considered for GATE identification through the professional judgement process. Teachers and/or parents may nominate a student. A completed nomination form must be submitted by the teacher or parent to the school Principal by December 15, 2023. Principals will set up meetings with the teacher, student, and parent to discuss the student’s eligibility for GATE identification.

Sports at MSJE

MSJE participates in girls & boys basketball and soccer. This year, 4th and 5th-grade students are able to try out for the teams. Participation in school sports requires the submission of the following forms prior to tryouts:

Basketball is a winter sport. Tryouts will be held in November. Games and practices will be scheduled from December through February.

Soccer is a spring sport. Tryouts will be held in March. Games and practices will be scheduled in April and May.

Red Ribbon Week is an awareness campaign to teach students about the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol, and encourages healthy choices.  This year’s theme is “Be Kind to Your Mind.  Live Drug Free”  Our school will be celebrating and committing to being kind to ourselves and others by participating in a spirit week from October 23-27th.

This month, students will learn about “Emotional Management” from the Second Step Curriculum.  At home, we encourage families to engage in conversation which reinforce their student’s learning and support additional practice beyond the classroom.  The following resources provide an overview of the ideas and concepts your student will be learning:  Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, Third Grade, Fourth Grade, and Fifth Grade.

PTC Connections

We are all looking forward to a year of partnership, involvement, and enrichment! The support provided by parents and families will continue to play an important role in our students' lives.

Thank you, in advance, for your support!

The PTC mission is to facilitate excellent communication among parents and teachers together, and to build one another up for the benefit of these amazing children! The goal of the 2023-2024 PTC Contribution Drive is to raise and administer funds that provide enrichment opportunities to MSJE students beyond those provided by the FUSD. The PTC will react to the changing needs of our students and teachers, and focus on creative ways to complement the ever-changing learning environment, and we need your support to do so!

Over the years, the PTC has funded after-school programs, classroom, and school needs to promote a more advanced and holistic education for our students. Examples include STEM programs such as Math Counts, Math Olympiad, and Schmahl Science; Arts programs such as FAME, Music Programs, Creative Assemblies, Teacher Allotments, School Technology, School Library, Chess, and more. All funded by parents like you.

Your one-time donation for the current academic year is very important as the children’s needs are new. To donate, simply point your smartphone camera at one of the QR codes below and tap the link that pops up.

Suggested donation: $225 per student

Thank you in advance for your help!

For more information, please visit the PTC page on the MSJE Website or email the PTC at msjeptcexecboard@gmail.com.
