Student council has organized 4 special spirit days for December. Today was "stuffy" day.
These photos show how "green" our class is. We have 25 spider plants, 2 peace lilies, a 5-foot money tree, 3 ferns, a pineapple plant, a giant palm and of course the Nutritower with a huge crop of basil!.
We are continuing our experiments with contaminated water, but this time with bean and pea plants.
Students are using their understanding of mass, shell and frame structures to use only paper and tape to design and build one of each of the 3 types of structures.
In this photo, you can see Alexis's planning notes.
Stay tuned for photos of completed structures!
Students have been investigating the causes and impact of climate change. Today they worked in groups to determine criteria for the "worst" cause of climate change.
In the next few days, they will be using data to create an infographic to demonstrate their understanding of climate change.
We were very excited to learn that our delegation of Jersey and Sabian has been approved to present at the December 13 City Council meeting at City Hall in Port Colborne! If you would like to attend this meeting to support our class and our proposal to replant a grass median with native plants, please reserve a seat by calling City Hall.
Students are applying their understanding of multiplying a fraction by a fraction, a fraction by a whole number and a mixed number by a mixed number to solve word problems.
A key idea is to carefully decode the problem first. Looking at this problem, at first glance students are sometimes tempted to think of this as a subtraction question. But what makes it a multiplication question is that you need to determine a fraction of a fraction of the driveway.
Students need to spend time at home practising solving these problems to build confidence and mastery.
It is really tempting to copy and paste ideas when summarizing information from text. However, as this cartoon shows, it is a form of theft.
Students learned 4 excellent strategies to paraphrase text effectively so they really understand what they are reading.
To practise these strategies, students are reading scientific text about structures (e.g., Leaning Tower of Pisa, Confederation Bridge in PEI and Tacoma Narrows Bridge) that will help them design and build their own structures.
In these 2 photos, you can see how Taylor and Brianna are using these strategies.
